ABOUT CANTON-POTSDAM HOSPITAL

The Canton-Potsdam Hospital (CPH) is a nonprofit community healthcare facility that provides inpatient treatment services for individuals struggling with substance abuse in Potsdam, N.Y., less than an hour from the US-Canadian border. One of just 56 (6.7 percent) inpatient hospitals in the state of New York, the 17-bed inpatient care unit offers 24-hour medical supervision, pet therapy, and educational counseling.

Detoxification and outpatient services are available, respectively, about 45 minutes west in Gouverneur and in Potsdam.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Many clients enter the CPH inpatient unit following a brief period of three to five days detoxing at the nearby Gouverneur Hospital, only 45 minutes west of Potsdam. Once stabilized, clients can then transfer to CPH for inpatient care where they’re met with an initial assessment and evaluation that may include referrals for other services.

Depending on their needs, inpatients may attend a curriculum of evidence-based treatments such as individual and group counseling, family sessions, trauma therapy, occupational and recreational therapy, health education, aftercare planning, and self-help meetings. Clients struggling with problematic gambling can receive counseling and support for these issues as well.

CPH makes use of animal-assisted therapy, which consists mostly of residing cats and visiting dogs. “Patients with allergies, asthma triggered by pet dander, or phobias should probably select another program,” the hospital’s website notes accordingly.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Led by a medical doctor who’s a psychiatrist, the professional team at Canton-Potsdam Hospital includes a clinical social worker (CSW), a credentialed alcoholism and substance abuse counselor (CASAC), a certified therapeutic recreation therapist (CTRS), and a registered nurse (RN).

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The 17-bed inpatient care unit at CPH has private counseling and patient rooms. The entire hospital is tobacco-free and its website notes that patients may not bring cigarettes, cell phones, laptops, and other electronic devices with them into treatment.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The four alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com to date left mostly positive feedback, including strong approval for areas such as treatment effectiveness and staff support. Alumni described the program as “excellent” and instrumental in saving their lives, one of whom found favor in getting “lots of 1 on 1, Lots of group time.”

Of those who noted the center’s use of pet therapy, some found it comforting while others complained of having reactions. Two of the three alumni polled on the matter found treatment cost worthy while the third remained neutral here.

To date, CPH also has hospital-wide average ratings of 3.9 out of five stars from over 470 Facebook users and 3.5 out of five stars from 19 Google reviewers.[1][2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Feedback provided by the five individuals surveyed on their loved ones’ experience was more mixed, with perspectives on treatment areas varying:

Would recommend: 3.3/5 stars
Staff experience and training: 3.3/5 stars
Family participation: 3/5 stars
Exercise and leisure: 2.75/5 stars

Despite these fairly mediocre ratings, one reviewer described the program as highly effective, telling Rehabs.com of family members who were “allowed to sit in for group sessions and were allowed to be as active as my brother wanted.”

Others felt family involvement was lacking. “They didn't bother involving us, my sister's family, in her treatment at all,” one loved one wrote, in addition to noting how their sister’s co-occurring mental health disorder went undiagnosed. Another agreed and felt that the hospital “could do more on the psych side.”

FINANCING

According to the hospital’s website, services are covered by Medicaid and most private insurance plans. Financial aid may be available to those who qualify.

Allows some comfort animals. Phone priviledge needs better montering. Make sure you understand what amount of time your insurance will cover and on going cost.

The facility worked with my sister's resources to get her treatment paid for. The facility did not help my treat my sisters underlying mental illness, on top of her extremely bad drug addiction. She left early and went right back to using. This facility is definitely lacking in the therapy aspect of drug rehabilitation. They didn't bother involving us, my sister's family, in her treatment at all.
