ABOUT CARILION CLINIC PSYCHIATRY & BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE - CHEMICAL DEPENDENCY CARE & RECOVERY

Located next to the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Virginia, the Carilion Clinic’s psychiatry and behavioral medicine department operates one of the 202 (88.2%) chemical dependency outpatient treatment programs in the state. Adults, adolescents, and children struggling with substance use can receive support for addiction and related co-occurring behavioral health conditions. Inpatient treatment is available on the psychiatry unit at the Roanoke hospital and is also offered at Carilion Clinic’s Saint Albans Hospital in the New River Valley.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Carilion Clinic offers a confidential phone-based assessment service which clients can call to receive referrals to an appropriate level of care.

According to the clinic’s website, comprehensive outpatient treatment in Roanoke is available to individuals, couples, and families. A plan of care is developed for each client, to fit the individual’s age and mental health needs. Most plans incorporate one-on-one and group therapy, and medication therapy is provided as needed. Individual sessions are with doctors who specialize in areas related to the client’s circumstances, such as depression and anxiety, geriatrics, psychosomatic medicine, or child and adolescent psychiatry. In Virginia in 2016, an average of 12.56% of adolescents ages 12 to 17 experienced a major depressive episode in that year, and 2.63% needed but did not receive treatment at a specialty facility for illicit drug use.

Along with psychotherapy, among the several treatment modalities offered at Carilion Clinic’s Roanoke facility are cognitive behavioral skills development, electroconvulsive therapy, and education.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team featured on the facility’s website includes more than 30 board certified psychiatrists.

In Virginia, 97.3% of substance abuse treatment facilities have continuing education requirements for staff.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital has one of the only 11 (4.8%) hospital inpatient psychiatry and behavioral health units for adults, as well as a separate location for adolescents and children and adult outpatient services. There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its inpatient living arrangements, related offerings, or outpatient meeting spaces; however, the average number of hospital inpatient beds at a given time is 13.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The one former client surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing give the facility positive feedback regarding the level of staff training and experience, the availability of options for counseling approaches to fit their preferences, the effectiveness of treatment, and admissions and discharge procedures. While each of these features of the program received ratings of four or five stars out of five, metrics measuring opportunities for family involvement and the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep received only three stars. The affordability of treatment fared the worst, with a two-star rating. The reviewer characterized staff and the environment as “great” but identified food and other unspecified resources as weaknesses.

On Google, 10 reviews of the clinic generated 2.6-average stars.[1] None specified chemical dependency care; two focused on meeting with individual psychiatrists and one complained of untrained staff in the children’s unit. Another wrote, "The food was decent at best" and wished there were more visiting hours and more comfortable beds. One of the only positive reviews came from a former client who was 13-years-old during her 10-day stay. She felt the staff were friendly and helpful, and concluded, "Overall, I've been in some really horrible hospitals but this one was definitely my favorite if I had to pick one."

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

At the time of this writing, Rehabs.com has received survey responses from two loved ones who offered opposing feedback. One individual provided a rating of only two stars to indicate their likelihood of recommending the program to others. The other loved one gave this a rating of five stars, and gave five-star ratings to most other categories as well, including holistic offerings, family participation, counseling options, the admissions and discharge procedures, affordability, and the facility's treatment of co-occurring disorders.

The other loved one also gave five stars to admissions and discharge procedures, and family participation was given a high rating of four stars. However, three-star ratings suggested mediocre opinions of the level of staff training and experience, counseling options, and the effectiveness of treatment overall.

FINANCING

The Carilion Clinic website notes that most major commercial insurance plans are accepted, including Aetna, Medicaid (accepted by just 59% of Virginia facilities), Medicare (accepted by just 49.8% of Virginia facilities), and Commonwealth Coordinated Care. Financial assistance is available to eligible individuals.
