Carolinas Healthcare System - First Step Philosophy

We believe addiction is a difficult condition for the mind and body, a challenge for anyone to overcome alone. At First Step, you are not alone. Together with a team of caring staff and a part of a connected system we address the mind and body on the road to recovery. We offer a variety of options to improve health, elevate hope and advance healing from substance use.

Areas of Specialization

  • Individualized Treatment
Some facilities have an addiction treatment protocol that all patients or clients are expected to follow, while others customize or individualize treatment based on a person’s unique needs and circumstances. Factors that may affect treatment decisions include age, lifestyle, medical conditions, type of drug, religious beliefs, etc.

  • Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
Patients who undergo intensive outpatient treatment continue to live at home and sometimes go to school or work while participating in a highly structured treatment protocol that is focused on ending substance abuse. Programs vary in terms of how much treatment patients receive, how often and for how long. Some facilities design individualized intensive outpatient treatment programs.

Dual-diagnosis treatment is also offered, which may include ongoing medication management along with counseling and educational services.

Available as a stand-alone or transitional program, IOP involves group counseling sessions, relapse prevention workshops, and individual counseling. Partial hospitalization, outpatient, and inpatient programming is also offered for children and teens dealing with behavioral problems. No information regarding accommodations and related offerings is available on the facility’s website; however, all individuals reviewing the facility for gave four- and five-star ratings for the center's accommodations and amenities. One reviewer, though, noted that the facility “needs improved holistic offerings."

The five alumni polled by to date gave the facility overall positive reviews. “Individual counseling was great,” wrote Wendy, and T.H. praised the facility for its "highest ethical standards." Though one alum felt that there were not enough holistic offerings, and another noted limited aftercare programming* a third anonymous alum felt the food was “good..but not enough,” despite still adding, "Great place that helped me immensely."

However, reviewers on Google were more critical, with seven reviewers giving the facility an average of three out of five stars.[1] Reviewers commented upon a lack of professionalism. “I think these courses should be taught by people do not drink or do drugs of anykind. The whole system is nothing but revenue driven," D.L. remarked. However, B.M., one of three five-star reviewers, wrote in a more positive review, “Fabulous company. Top notch rehabilitation services. Compassionate and caring.”

The sole staff member surveyed by to date provided highly positive feedback, giving five stars for family participation, affordability, treatment of co-occurring disorders, and staff level of experience and training. Four stars were given for counseling options and exercise activities. "Each patient receives a personalized treatment plan with a focus on their mental, physical and spiritual well-being. Patients are treated with respect and kindness and encouraged to experience lifelong recovery," T.T.N. wrote. The only weakness this staffer identified was that the center does not accept Medicaid or Medicare.

Staff members who reviewed Carolina Healthcare Systems on Indeed also shared positive experiences, with hundreds of reviews averaging to 3.9 out of five stars for the treatment provider as a whole.[2]

Not a bad choice for rehab but lacks in a comprehensive on-going plan after IOP. In patient needs to be longer before IOP starts.

Strong, patient/client-centered program, highest ethical standards. CARF accredited. Multiple locations in Raleigh, Durham, Garner & Cary NC
