ABOUT CARRIER CLINIC - BLAKE RECOVERY CENTER

Founded in 1910, Carrier Clinic is one of New Jersey’s 175 (50.9 percent) private, non-profit behavioral health facilities. Alongside an array of psychiatric services provided from its 100-acre campus in central New Jersey, the organization offers the Blake Recovery Center (BRC), which provides detox, residential, and outpatient services for individuals seeking treatment for substance abuse and dual diagnoses. It is one of the 225 (65.4 percent) of New Jersey treatment centers to offer intensive outpatient programming (IOP).

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Blake Recovery Center uses the 12-Steps alongside a fairly traditional array of clinical practices, and the length of programming varies according to the individual client’s needs.

Upon completion of a thorough assessment, many clients begin their recovery with detox, under the facility’s 24/7 medically supervised care. BRC’s residential program aims to address the “medical, emotional, and social needs of each individual,” by taking a comprehensive, individualized approach to treatment.

Residential programming typically includes individual and group counseling, family intervention and involvement, addiction education, and 12-step meetings. The program seeks to actively involve the client and their family members in every stage of treatment, from admission to discharge. For families, the facility offers a weekend codependency program.

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) meets on weekdays evenings, for three hours at a time. Clients continue to work the 12-Steps while receiving education and participating in mandatory, random urine tests.

BRC also offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT), including Suboxone, which is offered in 27 percent of New Jersey treatment facilities. In 2017, 33 (2.5 percent) of the facilities in the state had MAT programs.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

The treatment team includes psychiatrists, social workers, physicians, nurses, and addiction counselors. It is one of the 66 (19.2 percent treatment facilities in New Jersey accredited by the Joint Commission. To date, the 32 individuals polled on the matter by Rehabs.com generally appreciated the aptitude of staff.

The 32 individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center’s cleanliness and exercise and leisure offerings gave mostly positive ratings.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The 14 alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided mostly positive feedback about the Carrier Clinic Blake Recovery, with few complaints. In their comments, several reviewers credited the facility with their long-term sobriety and even with saving their lives. They also frequently provided positive feedback about the center’s staff, the variety of therapeutic options, and the attractive campus and accommodations.

Would Recommend: 4.1/5
Counseling Options: 3.7/5
Family Participation: 3.7/5

However, some alumni noted that treatment was very expensive. “Very comprehensive staff and therapy programs but very expensive,” one anonymous reviewer wrote in a representative review. “Located on a beautiful well kept campus inside and out,” another added. One alum also noted a lack of aftercare.

The reviews also yielded a few isolated complaints citing poor accommodations, inattentive nursing staff, and “unqualified” group therapy leaders — though each of these accusations was contradicted by praise from other alumni.

On Google, Carrier Clinic has an average rating of 2.6 out of five stars from 124 reviews to date.[1] Feedback was polarized, with some very negative reviews that describe care as “barely adequate.” However, some of the positive reviews provide feedback about how the “food and community” and amenities were good.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

Like alumni, the loved ones repeatedly provided positive feedback about the center’s staff and campus, but also noted that treatment was very expensive. “The facility is beautiful… expensive… The staff was abundant and helpful,” one anonymous reviewer wrote in a representative review.

Family Participation: 4.3/5
Would Recommend: 4.3/5
Counseling Options: 3.9/5

However, reviewers also repeatedly cited a lack of proper care and attention and a lack of communication with clients’ families. “They isolate all of their patients from anyone in the outside world,” S.A. wrote. One reviewer also cited a lack of aftercare.

Connectivity/Visitor Policy: 4/5
Affordability: 3.7/5

FINANCING

BRC accepts private insurance, but asks that prospective clients first call their insurance provider to verify coverage. In addition, Carrier Clinic is one of the 89 (25.9 percent) of New Jersey treatment centers that accept Medicare as well as Medicaid for clients aged under 18 and over 65. The 31 individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center’s affordability gave it moderate ratings.

Doctor was inattentive. Bad experience and aftercare not intense enough. Child Relapsed due to the addiction they said did not exist. Campus is quiet. Rooms are clean. The staff is nothing special.

Overall the facility was good, did have a bit of an issue when detoxing that involve me having to be taken to a traditional hospital. The staff was a little bit reluctant with that part of my care, because they didn't want to have to send me to the hospital so I did find that irritating that they would allow me to get as bad as I did before they took me to a hospital. But eventually they did everything was sorted out and I detox effectively. Despite that small incident the staff was very very friendly and very kind and very understanding. They did not treat patients with a sense of Shame or judgement. And that alone is enough to make a facility acceptable. The facility's strength includes a very professional staff and quick turnover. Facilities weakness was that there was a lot of down time and nothing to do but sit outside.

I have brought my wife and dropped off others here and the intake process is horrendous. There is no sense of urgency at all. I am very disappointed with this place. With only 2 patients for admittance, 41/2 hours is rediculous to wait just to see the doctor. This does not even reflect how much longer we will have to wait. Unacceptable

Terrible care. My suicidal/heroin addict 18 yr old child was discharged 4 days after ONE meeting with a social worker who refused to speak with me (even though a release was signed giving permission for discussion). ONE exam with a doctor and was went home with a script for an anti depressant and an anxiety medication. No referrals for any doctor and/or therapist. No family involvement which is critical IMO. Awful just awful not recommended!

I have been to Carrier twice. Honestly saved my life. Rehab is what you *make of it. The facilities are clean & safe. New Blake unit was stunning. Why anyone has narry a thing to say about the food? One goes to rehab to get well, not obtain 5 star dining. Get a grip! I will say that I felt more understood by with employees who were addicts/alcoholics in recovery, which is not to say that the rest of the employees were not empathetic nor caring; they were. Bare in mind that they deal with addicts/drunks who sometimes leave & come back in a matter of mere hours. Tough job! They really are diligently attempting to save your life. More so than most of us have attempted to help ourselves.

I was shocked to see poor facilities and treatement provided to Acute Care Unit patients. Stereotypical insane asylum atmosphere. The staff for promotes this environment. Other units were \"better\" but still not great. Definitely would not recommend to anyone.... ever.

Very nurturing. Great staff. Lots of meetings for counseling and recovery. I loved the facility but found one of the doctors to be more interested in talking or texting on her phone than paying attention to me. After a complaint by several patients the problem was alleviated however. I would highly recommend this facility. I learned a lot from the program and left feeling I had the knowledge needed to help myself stay in recovery.

If you love your child please don\'t send them to Carrier Clinic! They lack an individualized approach to the patients admitted. They tend to use a \"rules are the rules and no exceptions\" approach rather than addressing the fact that not every child\'s situation is the same. The biggest example of this is how they isolate all of their patients from anyone in the outside world. They only allow calls to parents. While this may work for some patients, it certainly isn\'t healthy for all patients. Especially those with abusive parents. Secondly, they treat even the most sensitive at-risk-of-suicide patients in the same harsh way as those who are in there for violent and oppositional behavioral issues. And they speak over and invalidate the feelings of those they deem untrustworthy instead of taking them seriously or at least looking further into the situation. Overall, don\'t send your kid here or you\'ll risk them coming out worse than when they came in!

Be cautious of sending your loved one here as they over medicate and have an emergency response team which violently overreacts to any type of disturbance. The staff acts out violently against patients.

One of the worst experiences of my life. Accomodations (3 to a room and group bathrooms) were the worst. The nursing staff was inattentive to individual patients medical as well as emotional needs. All ages were grouped together, as well as those who wanted to be there for help and those who were court ordered. While outside on frequent "breaks" I learned more about illicit drug usage including where and when to get whatever one might want. I had never heard of half of that stuff before. No supervision while outside so patients who wanted to be positive had no choice but to listen to these kids who had no desire to change. The doctors were a JOKE. Especially the medical doctors who used a stethescope to listen to my lungs and heart which never actually touched my skin. I actually heard nurses (RN's) negatively talking about me when I was standing right there. Unqualified people leading groups, who were on a power trip. Would never recommend this facility to anyone that I cared about. I must say that the food and dining room was excellent. and the grounds were beautiful. But, that's not what I was there for.

It has a good reputation and it's out in the country by where our family lives. I don't think the treatment fell short, she is a raging alcoholic that is not ready for treatment. She wasn't there for long enough.

The discharge plan was to attend AA and I thought it was not the best to only provide this as the sole option. More referral options should have been presented to assist in recovery process. Treatment wasn't effective; did not meet our son's needs; minimized his problems.
