Rehabs.com 360 Guide

Review by Rehabs.com Contributors

Located on a tree-lined street in central Pasadena, Casa (or “Casa de las Amigas”) offers residential and outpatient treatment and sober-living facilities for women aged 18+ who are struggling with substance abuse and dual diagnosis.

Medical detox is not available on-site: new clients must not have consumed any alcohol or drugs for 24 hours prior to arriving at the facility.

Casa uses the 12-Steps and aims to help its clients achieve total abstinence. It takes a three-pronged approach, focusing on the mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of recovery.

The residential program typically lasts 30 to 90 days. Each resident is assigned an individual counselor, and alongside working closely with that counselor throughout their treatment, they participate in on- and off-site 12-step meetings, and often work with a sponsor during their stay. Should any resident display evidence of a co-occurring disorder, they are matched with an individual therapist. The facility also provides education on topics such as domestic violence, parenting, anger management, and relapse prevention. Families are required to participate in counseling and education sessions while their loved one is in residential treatment, and are encouraged to attend Al-Anon meetings, too.

A day treatment program (or partial hospitalization program/PHP) involves more than 26 hours a week of workshops and groups, and typically lasts 90 days. Once they’ve completed day treatment, many clients progress to general outpatient treatment, which consists of an individualized roster of individual therapy and small support groups. The center’s aftercare program includes one monthly individual session, weekly groups, and urine testing, as well as a 12-Step attendance requirement.

Staff includes an MD and marriage and family therapists, alongside external providers such as yoga therapists and acupuncturists. The four individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff’s level of training and experience gave it an average rating of 4.5 out of five stars.

There are beds for 32 women at a time, plus sober-living facilities, which are available to graduates for up to one year after they’ve completed treatment. At the residential facility, clients may participate in activities including yoga, walking, meditation, and volleyball. All four of the individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center five stars for its cleanliness.

Of the eight reviews submitted to Rehabs.com to date, six were positive and two negative. The three alumni polled on the facility’s offerings in a variety of treatment metrics gave it four and five-star ratings for its treatment effectiveness, exercise/leisure offerings, holistic treatment options, and family programming.

Alumni repeatedly praised the center’s staff: “Experienced staff, EXCELLENT classes/groups,” Danielle wrote. Otherwise, there was little overlap in clients’ praise. “Well maintained, very good structure,” Kristina wrote. Fellow alum Leslie spoke highly of the alumni program.

Of the two negative reviewers, one complained about unsanitary conditions and bad food, while the other, E.I., wrote: “Casa is not a safe place. On an executive level the turnover is high...The staff plays favorites…” E.I. also complained of a lack of medical attention and referred to a now discontinued detox program.

At the time of this writing, secondary review sites yielded mostly positive coverage, with average ratings of 4.3 out of five stars based on 72 reviews on Facebook[1] (where the facility can manage its own page), 4.1 out of five stars based on 12 reviews on Google[2], and 4.25 out of five stars based on 12 reviews on Yelp** Reviewers repeatedly described their experience at Casa as magical, life-changing, and even life-saving: “Hands down the only reason why I am alive today. They never gave up on me. Staff loved me until I can learn to love myself,” S.L.S. wrote in a review on Facebook. The few negative reviews tended to cite a lack of attention, particularly for those who had relapsed or otherwise struggled.

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date would strongly recommend treatment at this facility. “It is for women therefore women get a very specialized help,” the anonymous reviewer wrote, giving the center five stars for its treatment effectiveness, four stars for its family program and counseling options, and three stars for its holistic offerings and treatment for co-occurring disorders.

According to its website, Casa accepts all major insurance carriers. Two reviewers polled by Rehabs.com indicated that the center had helped them to access treatment even though they lacked funds or insurance, and the four individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center’s affordability gave it a four-star average rating.

concentrates on detox first so that the real work can begin. it is for women therefore women get a very specialized help. residential setting. doesn't feel like a facility. it is very specific in its services. it is not a one stop place for all needs.

Experienced staff, EXCELLENT classes/groups, multiple 12 step meetings available daily including AA, NA, CA, CMA and book studies as well as panels. However, there were a lot of women in one house. Best facility I have been to, I learned a lot.

If you call for three months in a row you can get in if you don't have insurance! The staff can really be used to your benefit if you're willing to reach out just a little! I made a ton on friends who are still sober, which is hard to do around where I live. Now I have people I can hang out with that are positive!!! Well maintained, very good structure, and great meals the patients cook! The cycle of work is very beneficial! However, not a whole lot of time by yourself to just relax and work on your own things. This is a good for some people I understand, but not for those who like to journal and so forth.

They made it easy for me to get treatment even when I had no money. They helped me to move from residential and sober living and offered me volunteer work that became my first job. I am now in their alumni committee to help the next generation of recovering addicts to feel at home and have fun in recovery. They know what treatment is about and make you feel loved and cared for while giving excellent treatment and on going alumni benefits.

Food was horrible. All processed lunch meat and cheese. Rats in the walls. Not clean. Speakers were good, but overall very stressful.

Casa is not a safe place. On an executive level the turnover is high. The counselors contradict each other...The staff plays favorites....Unqualified staff is in charge of severe cases...I do not recommend this place for residential treatment. Thank God I did not detox there. They do not have the capabilities to do anything medical at all. Their answer to everything is to call 911...Their detox room where they keep the laundry room....Casa's only selling point is that they are the oldest women's recovery house in LA However, that doesn't mean anything other than that....The relapse rate is high. One of the residents just graduated in September and already relapsed.

The facility met my needs, as I have been happily sober for three years. I would refer it to others seeking release from the torment of addiction.

I relapsed soon after because I wasn't done using yet...when I became sober I was able to rely on the tools and individual attention I received here.
