ABOUT CEDAR RIDGE ACADEMY
Located in Roosevelt, Utah, Cedar Ridge Academy is a private boarding school and residential treatment center for troubled teens (boys and girls ages 12 to 17). Cedar Ridge integrates educational programs with specialized therapy geared toward helping teens who are college-bound but struggling with substance misuse and co-occurring disorders or other emotional and behavioral problems.
According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 63.2 percent of treatment facilities in Utah are for-profit private entities and 28.5 percent offer treatment programs specific to adolescents.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Cedar Ridge uses a combination of cognitive and physical therapy methods, academic development strategies, and an immersive residential program to treat clients. The approximate length of treatment is nine months, though this varies depending on the goals set by the individual and family members.
Treatment begins with an initial assessment with the intake staff to determine the type and level of care needed. Each client is assigned to a primary therapist who provides individual and family counseling one hour per week.
Clients also participate in several hours of small group therapy per week, focusing on specific issues such as substance misuse, relationships and grief utilizing dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). According to a 2017 SAMHSA survey, 79.5 percent of treatment facilities in Utah use DBT in programming. There are also larger group meetings with the entire campus or individual dorm members.
Educational and therapy workshops are scheduled throughout the year in which staff members, family members, and clients address key relationship and skills development concerns. Parents are invited to participate in workshops at least three times per year.
According to the facility’s website, the treatment team at Cedar Ridge consists of three licensed marriage and family therapists, as well as a trauma and physical therapy specialist. All treatment team members hold degrees in their respective fields as well as other certifications. Academic personnel with the appropriate training and experience are available to help with academic training during treatment. Cedar Ridge is an accredited high school.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Cedar Ridge Academy is set on a more than 100-acre campus in a rural and serene location. According to the academy's website, students live in gender-specific, family-style homes that sleep 12 to 16 students. Each house includes a shared living room, kitchen area, and bedrooms with bunk beds. Residents participate in chores such as meal preparation, gardening, housekeeping, and caring for the animals on campus.
The school also offers a range of physical education and development options to promote healthy physical development. Clients can participate in a range of extracurricular activities, including various sports as well as hobby classes.
