Founded in 1967, the Cenikor Foundation is a nonprofit behavioral health organization that offers a full continuum of behavioral health and substance misuse care to individuals struggling with addiction and related mental health issues. Cenikor has 11 facilities located throughout Texas and Louisiana.

Located 20 miles southeast of Houston, Texas, Cenikor's Deer Park facility provides inpatient and outpatient detox and both short-term and long-term residential treatment. Other Cenikor facilities offer programs such as adolescent treatment, intensive outpatient, and sober living.

Treatment in all four programs is evidence-based. Clients receive an assessment prior to admission to determine the level of care needed. Inpatient detox, a service offered at 8.4 percent of rehab facilities in Texas, is designed to stabilize clients who are going through active withdrawal symptoms associated with substance use disorder.

Detox treatment consists of medication to minimize withdrawal symptoms, care supervised by a licensed medical director, and counseling by a licensed therapist. Clients may be referred to short-term residential treatment or outpatient services, including 12-step support groups, upon completing detox.

Outpatient detox, which is offered at 9.5 percent of rehab facilities in Texas, serves clients who are experiencing minimal withdrawal symptoms from opioids. The program consists of medication to assist with withdrawal symptoms, counseling with a licensed substance abuse therapist, and individualized treatment. Participants live at home and continue to work while enrolled in this program. Before completing the program, clients receive a thorough discharge plan and aftercare referrals, including to a 12-step support group.

Long-term residential treatment, offered at 21.8 percent of rehab facilities in Texas, or LTR, involves education, clinical counseling, and the therapeutic community (TC) model. Heavy emphasis is placed on vocational training and employment. Clients also learn how to manage their own money, and upon graduation, the facility will help them to secure housing and employment.

Short-term residential treatment, offered at 18.8 percent of rehab facilities in Texas, or STR, involves individual and group counseling, life skills training, gender-specific education, and multi-family education groups. According to Cenikor's website, clients in STR are introduced to community and social support groups, including 12-step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

Cenikor's website indicates that the treatment team includes licensed substance abuse therapists and a licensed medical director. Though no further information is provided, the single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff’s level of training and experience rated it four out of five stars.

According to Cenikor's website, amenities in the LTR facility include a spacious dining area, multipurpose rooms for groups and activities, TV rooms, a library, an exercise area and a space for yoga, and sleeping quarters. Inpatient detox and STR facilities include a spacious dining area, TV rooms, and sleeping quarters.

The lone alum surveyed by Rehabs.com to date gave a neutral review. The anonymous alum wrote that the "Program was effective," and added "That you have to work the program sincerely for it to work."

Secondary review sites yielded mixed feedback. As of this writing, the facility received a three out of five-star average rating based on 41 reviews on Google[1]; an average rating of 2.6 stars out of five on CiteHealth based on five reviews[2]; and an average rating of three stars from seven reviewers on the facility's unofficial Facebook page.[3]

The negative reviewers tended to cite poor treatment from staff: “Some staff take it seriously. For the most is all about the money and not the patient,” one anonymous reviewer wrote in a representative review on CiteHealth. Positive reviews tended to focus on the program’s efficacy.

The two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date gave mostly positive feedback and would recommend the facility to others. One anonymous loved one polled on the facility’s offerings in a variety of treatment metrics gave it five stars for family participation and treatment for co-occurring disorders, four stars for its counseling options, and three stars for its treatment effectiveness, holistic options, and exercise/leisure offerings.

The other loved one, M.H.W. wrote, “My daughter was treated with dignity and respect at all times… They saved my daughter's life.” However, she did give low ratings to most treatment metrics evaluated as well as to the facility's cleanliness, pricing, and meals and nutrition.

Cenikor accepts Medicaid, private insurance, and self-pay. The organization has preferred provider agreements with insurers including, but not limited to, Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, and Humana.

Program was effective. That you have to work the program sincerely for it to work. Some people got away with breaking the rules.

My daughter was treated with dignity and respect at all times. Her counselor was sensitive to her needs and beneficial to her recovery, and every aspect of her treatment was geared toward her recovery as well. They know exactly what you need to get well and provide it. We are more than pleased with the center. They saved my daughter's life.
