Through multiple centers located in south-central Pennsylvania, nonprofit Summit Health provides a wide range of healthcare services for patients of all ages. The Summit Behavioral Health clinic in Chambersburg, Penn., exclusively offers outpatient care for adults and adolescents who are struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. In order to be eligible for treatment, clients must have a referral from a family physician.

According to Summit Behavioral Health’s website, clients complete an initial assessment form with a drug abuse screening test or alcohol use disorders identification test. They then undergo a diagnostic evaluation to help determine the most appropriate course of treatment. Based on the findings, the clinical team designs a customized plan for each client that may incorporate individual, group, and family therapy as well as couples therapy. Medication is prescribed and managed as necessary. Therapists may utilize play therapy when treating younger patients.

The center provides specialized programming for older adults. It also hosts support groups for family members of clients undergoing treatment.

The clinical team at Summit Behavioral Health includes psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, licensed clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, and nurses.

The Summit Behavioral Health outpatient facility is located in the Coldbrook Center, which is off Route 30. The bright white building complex is set on a tree-lined, landscaped, well lighted commercial street with a parking lot. The clinic, which occupies Unit 2, operates Monday through Thursday from 8 7 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

An alum polled by at the time of this writing gave a mixed review of the care they received at the Summit Behavioral Health outpatient facility. They rated the program’s treatment effectiveness three out of five stars, accommodations and amenities four stars, and meals and nutrition the top five stars. This former client praised the “nice doctors and nurses.” However, they were disappointed in the lack of activities. “I was there three days and was very bored most of the time,” they wrote.

On its Facebook page, which the organization can manage, Summit Behavioral Health received an average of 4.3 out of five stars based on eight reviews at the time of this writing. [1] Of the total, six reviews were the top five stars, one was three stars, and the other was one star. The reviewers did not indicate their relationship to the center and may or may not all be alumni. The only individual who left commentary was the one-star reviewer, who presumably had firsthand client experience with the program: “This place is horrible. Staff are rude and snippy. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE.”

Clients may pay for services at Summit Behavioral Health by check, credit card, or cash. The center accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and many private insurance plans, including those from Aetna, Capital Blue Cross, and United HealthCare. Financial assistance, including discounts and loans, is available to those who qualify.
