Areas of Specialization

  • Family Program
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.

  • Out Patient
Outpatient treatment describes all addiction treatment that is not residential. Patients live at home while undergoing rehab

Chestnut Health Systems, located in Belleville, Ill., offers outpatient and intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment to adults and adolescents struggling with substance abuse. Chestnut Health Systems has been operating for over 40 years and operates four separate treatment facilities. The network also includes a research institute, credit counseling services, and employment assistance programs. Inpatient treatment and medical detoxification are offered at other locations in the Chestnut Health Systems network.

The Belleville location does not offer detoxification, but does use Suboxone in conjunction with its other treatment programs. The facility has been awarded The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval.

The Chestnut Health Services website says the facility utilizes “research based counseling and treatment methods.” To be admitted, clients must first complete an assessment at the facility. The assessment includes an individual diagnostic test, a consultation with a counselor, a urine drug screening, review of previous treatment records, and a physical screening.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Chestnut Health Services, one of 416 in Illinois, involves nine or more hours of counseling per week on weekdays or evenings. Throughout IOP treatment, clients receive individual and group counseling as well as substance abuse education and life skills training. The Outpatient Treatment Program at Chestnut Health Services is recommended for clients who have completed inpatient or IOP programs, and involves eight hours of counseling each week. Medication Assisted Treatment using Suboxone is also available. Chestnut Belleville is part of the 20.2 percent of facilities in Illinois to offer Suboxone treatment. Participants are encouraged to participate in various self helps groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Celebrate Recovery.

The Adolescent Addiction Treatment program offers individualized treatment plans to children ages 13-18. Only 26.5 percent of Illinois facilities offer programs specifically tailored to adolescents. The program uses 12 step methods, recreational activities, and family programming. Chestnut Health Systems encourages families to participate in their loved one’s treatment experience regardless of which program the family member is completing.

The treatment team at Chestnut Health Systems consists of doctors, psychiatrists, nurses, licensed primary counselors, residential counselors, recreation coordinators and case managers.

At the time of this writing only a single individual has responded to the survey. The anonymous loved one said he would not recommend Chestnut Health Systems to others. He gave the facility four out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, three stars for accommodations & amenities, and three stars for meals & nutrition. He agreed that there are many counseling options to choose from, agreed that the facility is adequately equipped and staffed to treat co-occurring mental health problems, but disagreed when asked if the facility staff are experienced and well-trained. He felt that a strength of the facility was “It is close for the community.” When asked about weaknesses of Chestnut Belleville, he said “They kind of just push meds.”

Opinions on third party sites are mixed. On the facility’s Google page, there is an overall rating of 3.2 out of five stars based on 110 total reviews.[1] Five reviewers gave five stars, and four reviewers gave one star. S.R., the parent of a client, who gave one star, said that the facility is dirty and “no one knows what’s going on.” She wrote, “I can't even begin to start with all the failings going on here.” T.R., an alum, did not agree with that viewpoint. She gave five stars and wrote, "I am glad that there are ppl who bring family back together after a horrific event."

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its costs. However, according to the facility website, Chestnut Health Services accepts medical insurance, Illinois Medicaid and direct client payment by cash, check or credit card. Chestnut accepts insurance from Aetna, Aetna Better Health, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cigna, and more. The facility website states that employees can also help with loans and state-funded financial assistance. Clients are encouraged to contact the facility directly for additional information regarding the costs associated with treatment.

Really unprofessional company who are not suited to deal with the mental health System. Ironically, they just managed to piss me off even more by denying Tricare. But bc they were court ordered and highly suggested by my PO, I planned to see them. So I went hesistantly offering to pay out of my own pocket. But the last straw was when they cancelled an appointment for mistaking my Tricare for my Medicare. Will not be seeing them again.
