Located about 45 minutes south of Columbus, Ohio, the Chillicothe Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center’s mental health program supports veterans through a continuum of acute and chronic mental health, substance abuse, and employment and housing services. Other offerings include a LGBT Support Group and gender-specific programming to address a range of female health issues through clinical care, education, and counseling.

Those struggling with mental health and substance abuse are cared for through Chillicothe VA Medical Center mental health division’s community-based initiatives. Counseling, clinical services, and outreach activities are designed to help veterans of various backgrounds — including the homeless, incarcerated, and justice-involved — rejoin their respective communities.

Through its health care division, the facility provides exams, treatment, referrals, and case management services for veterans who require medical, psychological, and/or social support. Veterans seeking to return to work have access to employment assistance programs. A special program helps homeless and at-risk homeless veterans prepare for work through job training and placement services. In addition, housing subsidies and services allow veterans and their families to live in market-rate rental apartments.

The Chillicothe VA Medical Center Women’s Health Program provides female veterans access to health evaluations, counseling services, and substance abuse treatment. Treatment that addresses various mental health issues, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), also is available here.

Chillicothe VA Medical Center is fully accredited by The Joint Commission. The organization’s community-based facilities each have a primary care team that includes a doctor, physician extender, nurses, and administrative personnel. The clinical team at the VA’s Women’s Health Program consists of two physicians, licensed practical nurses (LPNs), and women’s health social workers.

Chillicothe VA Medical Center is based in a building that features a gym and an indoor pool. Those interested in religious/spiritual services have access to an on-site chapel. The organization also operates six community-based outpatient clinics.

Four alumni polled by at the time of this writing offered mainly positive feedback about Chillicothe VA Medical Center’s mental health services. The alumni gave high four and perfect five-star ratings for the facility's cleanliness and exercise and leisure options. Alum J.R.H. stayed at the facility for more than 90 days, successfully completed treatment, then entered sober living housing. This former client told the program: “Saved my life.”

An anonymous client cited the strengths of the facility as peer support, numerous groups for substance abuse and other problems, and leisure activities. This alum wanted to know: “if you are a veteran and service connected this is the place to go...because its free and you’ll have plenty of veterans around that are going through the same difficulties you are.”

On Chillicothe VA Medical Center's Facebook page, which the facility can manage, there was an average rating of four out of five stars based upon 252 reviews. While reviews spoke of the hospital as a whole and not specifically the mental health services, praises was directed at the staff, while criticism was focused on long wait times and unresponsive customer service.

A loved one surveyed by to date about the facility provided negative feedback. The loved one chose not to rate the accommodations and amenities, meals and nutrition, exercise and leisure, and holistic offerings metrics, and gave three stars or lower to all other metrics, excepting affordability. The loved one wrote: “It was very affordable but had poor quality family participation.”

Chillicothe VA Medical Center does not provide information about the cost of treatment on its website. The facility accepts private health insurance and military benefits. However, it does not work with Medicare and Medicaid. Individuals who require financial assistance may qualify for financing options, such as a monthly repayment plan that typically extends up to three years.

The peer support and all of the different groups they had ranging from substance abuse to also touching on the patients mental problems were beneficial. Well if you a veteran and service connected this is the place to go to. Pratially because its free and you'll have plently of veterans around that are going through the same difficulties you are. Also the leasurie activites here are great they even have a golf course. The program also trys to keep you as busy as possible if you allow it too by lots of groups and part time employment during the program.

I know this is a private sector to veterans only but I tell you what, you can enter this program as many times as it takes and they give us every opportunity to recover and stay recovered. They never turn us away. They have the best staff that is appropriately trained to handle these vets with PTSD, multiple addictions, behavior disorders, traumatic injuries and they are the best. I can't say enough about the Chillicothe VA
