CityTeam - Oakland Philosophy

Cityteam’s facility in Oakland, California offers numerous services designed to help those in need. The residential drug and alcohol treatment program offers long-term care for men that’s client-driven and grounded in the 12-Steps. Clients learn responsibility, leadership, and stewardship by working at the mission, while at the same time participating in therapy sessions, anger management meetings, Bible studies, life skills training and a course of career enhancement designed to help clients find employment after completion of the program.

Areas of Specialization

  • 12-Step
The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.

  • Residential Treatment
Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.

We believe God has created all of us in His image, and that He has given us great things to achieve. There is still so much more to do. So many more people are coming to us for assistance. And as we prepare to help the next person who needs us, I know that it will take all of us — Cityteam staff, volunteers and you, our partner — to transform their lives. 360 Guide

CityTeam is a Christian non-profit that provides addiction treatment services to homeless and vulnerable people across the country. Founded in 1957, it now runs centers in five US cities and serves more than 500,000 people a year. The facility is among the 699 (53.3 percent) non-profit treatment centers in the state.

One of the only 686 (52.3 percent) gender-specific treatment centers in the sate, the Oakland location offers long-term residential treatment for men. CityTeam also operates another residential treatment facility in San Jose.

The highly structured addiction treatment program at CityTeam is one of the 440 (33.6 percent) long-term programs in the state, and includes counseling sessions, recovery classes on anger management and relapse prevention, as well as 12-step meetings. The facility’s website states that drop-in interviews are held weekly.

Men enrolled in the residential program can take classes at The Learning and Career Center to further their educational and vocational skills. Men learn at their own pace with their own individualized lesson plan and can take classes in writing, math, reading comprehension, computer literacy, and ESL, along with building basic life skills.

Once they have met their educational goals, they can register to take the GED and begin career counseling, which includes resume preparation, creating and keeping a budget, and job interview training.

Residents are expected to participate in Bible study, share household chores, and hold themselves accountable to one another.

According to the facility's website, CityTeam Oakland's branch is led by a city director with over 20 years of ministry and community experience, including working in senior pastor roles. CityTeam Oakland also utilizes volunteers for meal service, laundry, and kitchen aid. In addition, the facility partners with volunteers to administer medical aid for homeless clients, men in recovery programs, and low-income individuals.

CityTeam facilities do not offer luxury amenities, and clients must stay in shared rooms. However, all basic necessities are provided for, including three meals a day and clothing. CityTeam’s Oakland location also offers breakfast everyday and dinner Saturday through Thursday for those in need.

The two alumni who responded to a poll to date indicated that they would recommend the facility, and the third who did not respond to this metric did write, "Great recovery staff is awesome." Providing a five-star rating of level of staff experience, one of these anonymous alum added, “City Team gave me help for my addictions and the wherewithal to successfully re-establish my life.” Another other anonymous alum remarked, “I lived there for 2 years and was able through City Team associations to "reboot" my life.”

However, one respondent felt that the facility could be “dangerous” at times, giving just two stars for the counseling options offered, while another added, “lack of discipline towards people who were incarcerated,”

Reviews gathered elsewhere were positive. On Google, the facility earned 4.6 out of five stars based on 44 reviews at the time of this writing, with consistent praise for its emergency sheltering and excellent staff.[1] Kenya representatively praised the recovery program, writing, “They show people love and don't look down on you," and W.R. added, "Awesome group of guys and dedicated staff."

On Yelp, two users both provided ratings of five out of five stars.[2] M.C. wrote, "Helping to make a better place in Oakland. This place under new leadership is turning around quickly," while A.G. added, "This place has a very strong impact on our community."

While has yet to receive feedback from this facility's staff as of this writing, five Glassdoor users generated an average rating of 2.8 out of five stars.[3] Positive commentary tended to praise the " unified team environment," though criticisms included issues with work/life balance.

Providing its comprehensive recovery program at no cost, CityTeam is a 501(c)(3) organization that relies on donations from individuals, foundations, corporations, churches and other organizations.
