For more than 25 years, Clarion Psychiatric Center has delivered care to individuals with psychiatric, behavioral, and/or emotional issues. Located on a 14-acre campus in northwestern Pennsylvania, roughly 90 minutes north of Pittsburgh, the facility provides inpatient treatment to adults, adolescents, and children. It also has partial hospitalization programs (PHP), a modality offered by 15 percent of all treatment facilities in the state.

According to Clarion Psychiatric Center's website, all treatment plans are individualized. Whether in treatment for anxiety, depression, paranoia, extreme anger and aggression, or another emotional difficulty, treatment plans emphasize the replacement of destructive behaviors and habits with healthy coping and life skills. Clients may undergo psychosocial, nursing, and psychiatric assessments and evaluations upon entry.

Clarion’s Adult Inpatient Program is designed for individuals with moderate to severe behavioral health disorders. Over the course of their stay, ranging from a few days to a few weeks in length, adults are educated on the long-term effects of alcohol and drug use, attend individual and group therapy sessions, and plan for discharge. A weekly Family Education Group is available for loved ones.

Offering many similar services, the Child and Adolescent Program takes place in separate, age-specific units. Children attend psychoeducational groups addressing topics such as anger management and coping skills, and are given ample time for recreation, art, and music and play therapy through Clarion’s Allied Therapy Program. In a separate education wing designated for school, certified special education teachers lead children’s classes. For children and teens who do not require inpatient treatment, the PHP track offers on-campus programming on weekdays, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Clarion’s large treatment team includes several board-certified psychiatric physicians, as well as registered nurses, a licensed clinical social worker, and others with advanced degrees.

Clarion's website indicates that the 74-bed facility features classrooms, a large cafeteria with a salad bar, and shared bedrooms decorated with colorful bedding and wall art. There’s also an indoor gym and playground outdoor, where adults and adolescents regularly receive time for recreation. Smoking is permitted in a designated enclosed courtyard.

The single anonymous alum surveyed by to date considered the “people” a facility strength, and the “staff” its primary weakness.

On Google[1], Clarion Psychiatric Center earned an average rating of 2.8 out of five stars based on 27 reviews. Feedback was split down the middle -- of the 18 former clients who left commentary, nine gave the facility positive feedback and nine gave the facility negative feedback. Alumni who had good experiences described the programs as effective and the staff as caring and compassionate. In a review representative of positive feedback, Thomas wrote: "This place saved my life. They took the time to adjust my meds and make sure I was good. They were caring and understanding."

Negative reviewers, on the other hand, complained about rude staff, bad food, and run-down facilities. "This place is unbelievable they do more harm than good they do not do have of what they say the staff is the ones that need the help holding people against their will," Dawn wrote in a review representative of negative feedback.

Per the facility’s webpage, Clarion works with many HMO and PPO insurance plans, as well as Medicaid and Medicare. It is among the 25 percent of Pennsylvania facilities to accept Medicare.
