Clean Adventures Philosophy

Clean Adventures has a visionary approach to provide the best treatment possible in a safe environment utilizing the 12 steps, a full time clinical staff and an extensive Adventure based program to develop a life of recovery.

Areas of Specialization

  • Trauma & Associative Awareness Therapy (AAT)
Associative Awareness Therapy (AAT) uses the brain’s innate ability to adapt to change in a healing way, essentially “retraining” the brain to respond differently to familiar memories of trauma or pain.

  • Family Program
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.

Located about one mile above sea level and 100 miles from Phoenix in the Arizona city of Prescott, Clean Adventures is one of just 82 (22.9 percent) residential treatment facilities in the state. For adult men addressing drug and alcohol abuse, this program takes a very specific approach to treatment. Clients who struggle with addiction participate in structured supportive housing, intensive cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and outdoor adventure excursions. According to the facility’s website, the “adventure-based” treatment is designed both to challenge clients and to provide opportunities for them to learn to enjoy sober lives. This is also one of 205 (57.3 percent) facilities in Arizona to offer treatment for co-occurring mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression.

No detox services are provided on-site.

The six-month program builds on 12-step meetings and evidence-based modalities including CBT, rational emotive behavioral therapy, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Clients meet individually with a psychiatrist once a week and, according to the facility’s Facebook page, participate in about 10 hours of group processing sessions. Clean Adventures provides training and practice in life skills, covering vocational preparation, budgeting, and communication. Random alcohol and drug screenings are also conducted weekly.

Experiential and recreational therapies play a key role. Six off-site, multi-day trips offered per year include activities such as white water rafting, snowboarding, and canyoneering. During the time period when clients are in treatment in Prescott, local activities include rock climbing and hiking.

Clean Adventures encourages loved ones to be involved in the recovery process through a weekend family program that prioritizes networking, experiential therapy, communication, and family sculpting.

According to information provided to by the facility, Clean Adventures maintains a staff-to-client ratio of 2:1. Clinical treatment staff members hold master’s level degrees, and several - including alumni of the program - are in recovery themselves. In Arizona, 99.7 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities have continuing education requirements for staff.

The program has space for 27 residential clients, who stay in comfortably furnished homes. This allows for slightly more clients than the national average number of people in residential treatment at a time, which is 18 individuals. These clients are assigned chores and work with peers to maintain their living environment.

Of the three loved ones polled by to date, two awarded accommodations & amenities five out of five stars, and one gave this category a one-star rating.

While has not yet received feedback from former clients of this facility, the vast majority of reviews posted by alumni and their loved ones on the facility’s official Facebook page and on Google were very positive. On Facebook, which may be vetted by facility staff, 49 users gave an overall 4.8-star average rating.[1] In a representative comment, S.E. wrote, "Great program, incredible staff , very high level of care for their clients." The only somewhat displeased reviewer rated the program three stars and reported that staff training was uneven.

The three loved ones surveyed by at the time of this writing gave Clean Adventures positive reviews. All three awarded the program five stars for the overall effectiveness of treatment, and all three participated in family activities. Two reported that their sons had tried multiple other centers before succeeding at this one. Parent H.F. went on to write, "As a participating parent of a recovering client everything I have seen and learned about this facility is amazing. I can't pin point just one. They saved my sons life," and gave five stars to every category, including exercise and leisure activities, holistic offerings, counseling options, affordability, and the facility's effectiveness in treating co-occurring disorders. The other parent of a former client, M.C., gave five-star ratings across the board in all of these categories as well. "There aren't enough words to describe our experience," she praised, and noted that her son went on to work at the facility himself following his treatment.

The third loved one, also the parent of a former client noted that treatment was expensive, but worth it, and would recommend the program. Commenting, "the trauma therapy was very important in my child's recovery," this individual additionally appreciated "the housing management, drug testing intense training and learning of the steps. involving of the families."

Fees, according to information provided by the facility, begin at $7,800 per month, and some private insurance plans are accepted. Of the three loved ones polled by to date, all three gave the highest possible ratings when surveyed about fairness of pricing and whether or not treatment was worth the cost. The one individual who felt treatment costs were high noted, "it is still expensive, you can't put a price on saving a life."

There were serious structural problems during my stay at Clean Adventures. The medical component was particularly lacking, and the therapists were, in my view, temperamentally unsuited for the job. They were also dishonest about some of the offerings in an effort. I would not recommend.
