Communicare is a Kentucky-based community mental health center that provides treatment for substance use disorder, behavioral health, and developmental disabilities in eight Kentucky counties. This facility, located toward the north of the small city of Bardstown and 40 miles southeast of Louisville, offers outpatient treatment for substance use disorder.

Treatment begins with a chemical dependency assessment. Following assessment, clients participate in a fairly traditional program of individual, group, and family therapy; couples counseling; codependency treatment, where appropriate; and aftercare. The organization also provides consultation, education, and referral services, and DUI assessment and treatment services. For women, there are dedicated case management services that help link clients to healthcare providers, transportation services, childcare, housing, and other resources.

The organization also offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that involves individual, group, and family therapy and educational services for three hours, three night a week, for eight weeks. IOP services are not available at all Communicare locations, but all locations can refer clients to the program.

The organization’s chief behavioral health officer is a master’s level psychological associate. At the time of this writing, no further information was available about staff at the Bardstown facility in particular, however, the single individual polled by to date on the staff’s level of training and experience gave it four stars.

At the time of this writing, has received no reviews directly from alumni, and secondary review sites yielded very limited and polarized coverage: the center had two reviews on Facebook, one for one star and one for five stars.[1] “Inconsistent, unreliable, and unfriendly. I have been seeking services for over 2 months, and have had to reschedule with... the intake guy, 4 times. No compassion what so ever with people in need,” one-star reviewer Kayla wrote. The five-star reviewer left no commentary.

The single review submitted to to date was, for the most part, very positive. Though the anonymous reviewer gave the center just three stars for its family program and counseling options, and listed as a weakness the fact that it offered “just conuseling,” they also indicated that they would recommend the center. “Friendly employees that try to understand and help are a strength… my friend got clean,” they wrote, and gave the center four stars for its treatment for co-occurring disorders, holistic options, and overall effectiveness.

According to its website, Communicare accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and major insurance policies, and offers a sliding fee scale to qualifying clients. The single individual polled by to date on the center’s affordability gave it four stars.

In November 2016, the local broadcaster WLKY Louisville reported that a local lawyer had been arrested for stealing a client’s funds, incidentally reporting that the funds had come from a settlement relating to wrongful death at a Communicare facility. The client’s mentally handicapped son reportedly choked and died while left unattended at a Communicare facility in 2010.
