ABOUT COPE COMMUNITY SERVICES

COPE Community Services is a private, nonprofit health care organization that offers holistic behavioral and physical health care mainly through outpatient clinics in Tucson, Ariz. Residential treatment addresses primary mental illness, as well as dually diagnosed substance use disorders.

Some of COPE's half a dozen locations operate medication-assisted opioid treatment programs. Specialized programming is also available for young adults, pregnant women, and clients using IV drugs. In addition, the organization provides services to meet court-ordered treatment requirements.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

If detoxification is indicated by a COPE Community Services assessment, two distinct outpatient approaches are available. Methadone and Suboxone are both available, and the agency’s drop-in center offers Acudetox, which involves acupuncture. The center emphasizes on harm reduction, motivational interviewing, education, and linkages to continuing care.

Among the services provided through various substance abuse rehab programs are case and medication management, training in life skills, assistance with employment processes and GED prep, and individual and group counseling. Groups address such topics as domestic violence, HIV, budgeting, and art. Clients are also encouraged to participate in social and recreational activities. Childcare and linkages to housing support are available in some cases.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the facility’s website, COPE Community Services is committed to hiring staff who are bilingual and bicultural. The treatment team includes a psychiatrist, nurse practitioners, and master’s-level therapists. Each of three individuals polled by Rehabs.com on the staff’s level of training and experience awarded four or five out of five stars, though one alum cited understaffing as a weakness.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The COPE Community Services residential program supports clients holistically through providing transportation to such appointments as medical, financial and legal. There is currently no other information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements or related offerings. However, the two alumni and one loved one polled by Rehabs.com indicated strong satisfaction with the facility’s cleanliness and upkeep, with four- and five-star ratings.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

To date, Rehabs.com has received reviews for COPE Community Services from two former clients. Their ratings of three and four stars apiece for the effectiveness of treatment, as well as for their likelihood to recommend the facility, which echoed dozens of reviews sourced elsewhere on the internet.

Both Rehabs.com reviewers praised the staff. They granted ratings of four and five stars for metrics measuring counseling options, treatment for co-occurring conditions, and the facility’s affordability. Holistic offerings received three and four stars.

Dozens of Google reviews for several different COPE locations revealed significant trends both in perceived strengths and weaknesses of the programs. For the Craycroft clinic, 53 individuals contributed to an average rating of 3.7 out of five stars[1]. A mix of alumni and friends and family members tended to characterize the staff as courteous and service as timely. Countering these were fewer, but repeated, complaints about inconsistencies in counseling staff and disorganization.

In a representative positive review, alum T.C. wrote: “Everyone from Front Desk to Therapist are the most kind & caring people I have ever encountered in a Psychiatric Facility.” T.S. wrote that they were “always helped out quickly and politely.”

The Lakeside clinic received an average 3.6-star rating from 17 individuals, reflecting a strong emphasis on the problem of treatment staff turnover. In addition to echoing strengths cited elsewhere, reviewers of the COPE 5th Street clinic, granting a 4.1-star average from 76 individuals, praised the facility’s treatment affordability. Many also reported understaffing. Other clinic ratings ranged from 2.7 to maximum five stars, with comparable comments.

Reviews on the official Facebook page of COPE, which its staff can manage, followed overall trends.[2]

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date would recommend COPE. “They helped straighten my brother out,” the reviewer wrote, giving the center four stars for treatment of co-occurring disorders, as well as three stars for counseling options, family participation, holistic offerings, and affordability.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Staff reviews for COPE Community Services were in line with alumni perspectives. On Indeed and Glassdoor, a total of 42 former or current employees rated the facility in the range of 3.4 out of five stars. Staff typically expressed respect for their clients. On Indeed, some mentioned their commitment to listening to clients, while on Glassdoor several depicted the COPE treatment approach as team-based. They also cited high staff turnover, and a couple suggested need for further staff training.[3] [4]

FINANCING

COPE Community Services accepts Arizona’s Medicaid (AHCCCS and Title XIX). Many clients are treated through government grants or coverage by TRICARE, Medicare, or several private health insurance plans.

  • Treatment Effectiveness
I went thru out-patient services where I stayed 1 night due to suicidal thoughts, Mental Illness, and staff was very caring & concerned about my welfare & safety not only me but others around me. They worked with me all night and I was released the next morning to my case manager where we went over other places that would help me with the issues like food and help with my bills.. Staff helped me to get in touch with the actual & true feelings that was going on inside & gave me pointers to express feelings without hurting others. I could detect or see any weaknesses by staff or in the facility. Well at COPE you have to go down and request an appt. over the phone, keep the appt. get interviewed and tell them what you want or need help with your plans on reaching those goals without victimizing others or yourself. You must show a willingness to set and reach goals and attend the different self-help groups to assist you in getting you back on the right track to become a responsible & productive citizen once again.
