Cornerstone of Southern California Philosophy

Cornerstone has chosen to adopt Relapse Prevention as it's primary focus, because of the high rate of relapse following traditional treatment. Cornerstone believes chemical dependency is a disease that is chronic, progressive, treatable but not curable. It is a disease that can be placed in remission but is also prone to relapse. We believe both the disease and its Relapse are best treated through physical stabilization, psychological education, self-confrontation and social rehabilitation. We believe those seeking treatment are not guilty for having their disease but are responsible for its management. We believe abstinence is the beginning of the recovery process. Full recovery is total lifestyle change. We believe relapse is a Process not an event. A process that can be Identified, Interrupted and Managed. Cornerstone offers quality treatment programs at reasonable rates in Southern California . We accept most Insurance.

Areas of Specialization

  • Aftercare Support
Addiction recovery does not end with discharge after completing a rehab program. Facilities that offer aftercare planning and/or support work with patients to ensure sustainable recovery by helping to plan and make arrangements for transitional or sober living, help with housing, vocational counseling, etc.

  • Family Program
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.

Headquartered in Santa Ana, Calif., Cornerstone of Southern California offers treatment for adults struggling with substance abuse. Services, focusing on relapse prevention, include residential care, intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), medication-assisted treatment, sober living, and aftercare**.

Cornerstone is one of the state's 200 (14 percent) non-hospital treatment centers to offer medically-supervised detox onsite. Additionally, specialized programming is available for clients facing legal obligations. This facility is family-owned and -operated and takes pride in providing family programming and flexibility in its continuum of treatment services. In addition to the Santa Ana center, Cornerstone operates facilities in Orange and Tustin.

Detoxification services, overseen by the facility's medical staff, are available as a standalone service or as the beginning of a series of treatment programs at Cornerstone. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) utilizes Vivitrol injections, placing the center among the 19.1 percent of California facilities to administer Vivitrol.

While the facility does not provide on-site dual diagnosis treatment, clients needing concurrent care for mental health or physical disorders receive referrals to independent, local providers.

Residential rehab programming follows a social model, integrating 12-step concepts and peer accountability with cognitive behavioral and creative arts therapies. Attendance at a weekly family night is required, along with random drug testing.

Both standard outpatient and intensive outpatient care are available as step-down or standalone treatment options. Clients who wish to receive ongoing support as they re-enter their everyday lives may opt to reside at one of Cornerstone’s sober living homes. The center also offers free continuing care to all individuals who successfully complete a treatment program.

Cornerstone’s staff is comprised of over 70 employees, with a 1:1.2 staff-to-client ratio, according to the facility. Members of the clinical team include the founding physician, who is board-certified in addiction medicine, a Ph.D. level psychologist, certified alcohol and drug counselors, a yoga instructor, and a master's level, and certified music therapist. One staff leader is a military veteran and many team members are in recovery.

Residential clients stay in home-like facilities in neighborhoods described by Cornerstone's website as "upscale." A total of 24 beds are available for detox treatment, and the organization accommodate up to 120 individuals, placing six residents per house in the program. Some private rooms are available, and residents take care of some household chores. All clients have access to a nearby Gold’s Gym that offers exercise equipment, group fitness classes, and a swimming pool.

In addition to the gym four times a week, supervised outings include boating in Newport Beach, movies, and casual social games such as miniature golf. No smoking or use of personal electronic devices or phones is permitted, although Wi-Fi and TVs are available in each facility. Family visitation is arranged through individual case managers. Cornerstone also has a no-sugar and no-caffeine policy at its most intensive levels of treatment.

The five alumni polled by to date offered mostly positive opinions concerning the facility, although one individual reported they would not recommend the facility. They described the staff as disrespectful and the organization as inappropriately financially motivated.

However, alum D.M. awarded perfect five-star ratings to staff level of experience and training, the available counseling options, and the center's exercise and leisure activities. "Ability to cater to each individuals needs. Also, a good balance of behavioral modification and counseling," D.M. wrote. H.C.B. echoed this sentiment, writing, "Detox is great, classes and information was very helpful," and awarding four stars for most surveyed metrics, including its level of family participation and discharge planning. Both former clients agreed that the facility was worth its cost.

Another alum, A.M.S., appreciated that many of the counselors had personal experience in recovery, and P.R.P. expressed gratitude for the tools they received. While one anonymous reviewer reported that they did not maintain sobriety after a too-short of stay at Cornerstone, they did feel that the program contributed to "a progressive change."

Google reviewers offered more mixed perspectives, indicated by an average rating of 3.5 out of five stars from 47 individuals.[1] Repeated complaints included the program's strictness and over-reliance on medication, financial dealings* and insufficient support for dually diagnosed addiction and mental health disorders. Praise centered on the caring staff, effective treatment, and the usefulness of educational sessions. Feedback on Yelp was largely positive as of this writing, where 77 users awarded an average rating of four out of five stars.[2]

The two loved ones polled by to date shared negative experiences with the facility. One parent suggested that her daughter was removed from treatment too early, and another loved one describe the staff as "rude" and only focused on money.

About half a dozen Google reviews were submitted by friends and family members, with only one highly critical opinion. The negative review concurred with alumni reports of too much emphasis on medication and the expensive fees. In contrast, other family members highly recommended Cornerstone. Lynda praised the facility's strict program, cost, and effectiveness. Three reviewers highlighted the quality of family treatment.

T.S., one of three staff members polled by to date, offered their wholehearted recommendation of Cornerstone. They highlighted the center's "caring and patient staff" and its 30-year history of treating substance abuse. Former employee C.P. left no written feedback, but awarded high ratings for staff experience and treatment of clients. Contrastingly, former staffer D.P. indicated that the staff had changed and that the center's good reputation is now outdated.

Cornerstone is in-network with more than 20 insurance policies, including Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Multiplan, and Magellan.

Cornerstone is a shining example of recovery excellence. In an industry wrought with corruption and often dubious motives, Cornerstone stands as a model 2 emulate. Keep in mind you will have to buy into and adhere to the philosophy of Alcoholics Anonymous. But that's pretty much every Treatment Center in the United States of America. There are many notable & reputable doctors and scholars that don't buy into AA, but you won't hear them mentioned at a US-based treatment facility. In any case if you find yourself on this page best of luck to you or your loved one in sobriety.

After the many conversations I've had with their staff trying to accommodate my loved one into their program, they are EXTREMELY rude and only care about money. They seem so bothered when I ask questions like I'm supposed to know all about rehab or something. Pathetic.

Official Facility Response

Your experience was unfortunate and unusual. There is no date provided in your review but hopefully you did get help for your loved one. Insurance benefits have become very difficult to explain to prospective clients. Often it is impossible to check benefits at the time of crisis on weekends and during non-office hours.

Apparently right at this very moment Cornerstone has kicked my daughter off of their property and will not release her personal belongings or information so she can complete her treatment elsewhere. Apparently they have decided that with 5 or so days to go they need to extend her treatment . For what purpose? And now they are holding her things hostage. For a facility that supposedly is focuses on healing and betterment I guess it only depends on how many $$$ are involved.

Official Facility Response

20% of all clients are scholar-shipped to some degree if motivated. Clients are asked to leave when they are deemed a danger to the community or severely disruptive and even then we attempt to get the client placed elsewhere in an appropriate program. Personal belongings are made available as soon as possible as are medications once they have been checked by our physicians.

DO NOT send your loved one here. This place is all about money. They aren't professional and and the staff has NO RESPECT.

Great counselors and homes. The food is good and everyone seems to really care about the clients. They offer everything under one company. If you want to get it right the first time I would recommend anyone to go to Cornerstone of Southern California. They helped me through Detox and then I went to Extended Care and finally moved back home and still attended their Outpatient Program. I am a proud alumni now and couldn't be happier with my new sober life!

30 years of experience in treating addictions. Caring and patient staff. Relapse prevention education central to our treatment. Professional, ethical and effective treatment.

Christian based but too short. A wonderful program for a change, it wasn't the last rehab I was in, but it made for a progressive change.

Official Facility Response

Thank you for your review. I need to make one correction - we are not a Christian based program. We are a 12 Step based program with a Social Model component. We are proud to have been part of the positive change in your life!

I liked the idea that the staff members had all gone through the same life situation, had given recovery a REAL chance and in giving back decided to help others through the scary, yet beneficial process of recovery. You need to have an open mind and truly understand that everyone is there to help; no judging, no criticizing. Because anyone going through addiction needs a firm, however loving and caring guide through the process of recovery. They talked about aftercare options, however I chose not to go.
