Covenant House is a Florida-based nonprofit agency dedicated to serving runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth (including teen mothers and their babies). Originally established in 1987 as a “response to a lack of available treatment programs to youth, the nonprofit today provides substance abuse intervention under CHAMP (Covenant House Addiction Management Project) a nationally recognized, six-week residential substance abuse treatment program for youth.

Covenant House is also just one 135 (20.2 percent) facilities in the state dedicated exclusively to working with teens.

The assessment process is quite extensive at CHAMP. Upon entry into the six-week program, youth undergo a series of psycho-social, chemical dependency, and medical evaluations and exams, all while developing a personalized plan of care with their assigned case manager.

Programming consists of daily participation in A.A. and N.A. meetings, individual, group, and family therapy (where appropriate), relapse prevention training, and groups designed to help youth develop healthy and appropriate skills for anger management, conflict resolution, and self-esteem. Youth also benefit from supervised, sober recreation and are subject to random drug screenings throughout their stay.

Program participants also have opportunity to apply for a two-phase transitional housing program following successful completion of treatment.

Each youth is assigned a trained case manager throughout their CHAMP stay.

There is currently no information provided by Covenant House regarding the living arrangements and related offerings of its six-week residential program, however, a staff member surveyed by claimed that the facility is run from inside an “old” building that’s located on a “noisy and busy street.”

WHAT ALUMNI SAY has yet to receive any reviews from this facility’s alumni.

On Google, 52 individuals awarded Covenant House Florida a slightly above average rating of 2.8 out of five stars. Still, many reviews described the staff as rude or unprofessional, or both, while some shared more distressing stories of disappointment with the facility. “They kicked me and my daughter out with no where to go...” wrote N.I.N. in one such example. “She was 9 months at the time.”[1]

In the sole survey response for to date, an anonymous staff member called Covenant House “One of the largest and best (known) in the West Palm Area.” They also awarded their employer four out of five stars for its holistic opportunities, the staff level of training and experience, counseling options, and treatment for co-occurring disorders, amongst other areas.

CHAMP has been partially funded by the Broward County Children’s Services Administration since 1989, making it one of 278 (41.6 percent) facilities in the state of Florida that receive some form of public funding.

In addition, the anonymous staff member told that the intervention program offers scholarships and accepts “most insurances.”
