ABOUT CROSSROADS FOR WOMEN - MAYA’S PLACE
Crossroads for Women, located in Albuquerque, N.M., provides integrated, comprehensive trauma-related services with a gender-specific approach. Maya's Place, one of four programs sponsored by Crossroads, is a structured rehabilitative residential housing and support program for women recently released from jail or prison.
Crossroads for Women was founded in 1997 and Maya's Place was opened in 2005. The organization is one of 69 (44.8 percent) treatment facilities in New Mexico that is a nonprofit entity, according to a 2016 SAMHSA survey.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
To qualify for services from Crossroads for Women, women must be on parole or probation through the New Mexico Corrections Department or referred through Federal Probation Officers. Additionally, they must be sober at the time of admission and have at least one co-occurring issue. The facility is among the 37.7 percent of facilities in the state to offer specialized treatment for criminal justice clients.
Throughout their stay, women participate in on-site therapeutic programming to address their substance misuse and any mental health concerns. Treatment includes a variety of services such as life skills education, group therapy, vocational training, parenting classes, and holistic options. Treatment is designed to last three to 12 months, making Crossroads for Women one of only 16 (10.4 percent) treatment facilities in New Mexico to offer long-term residential care. According to the organization's website, patients cannot take prescribed Suboxone, Methadone, or medical marijuana during their stay.
Backed by the Crossroads executive team, Maya’s Place staffs a program director, a case manager who brings more than 25 years of sobriety to the program, as well as a vocational coordinator. Crossroads also relies heavily on support from volunteers.
