About the Facility

Reviewed by Our Contributors

Founded in 1969, Damon House is a nonprofit social services organization that offers residential and outpatient treatment for men and women aged 18+ who are struggling with substance misuse or dual diagnosis. The outpatient facility, located in the heart of Paterson, N.J., provides standard outpatient care and an intensive outpatient program (IOP), which is provided at 65.4 percent of New Jersey–based rehabs.

Damon House is also among the 50.9 percent of rehabs in New Jersey that operate as private nonprofits. The organization has a lot of experience working with clients referred via the criminal justice system, for instance through parole, probation, DUI, or drug court programs. However, self-referrals are also accepted.

Damon House emphasizes that every individual has the potential and the power to conquer their difficulties and succeed. The program is multidisciplinary, combining 12-step participation with evidence-based therapeutic methods, provided in individual and group counseling settings. The program also provides education on addiction and recovery for clients and their families. Through the IOP only, family counseling may also be provided, as needed.

The highest level of care at this outpatient center is the IOP, which meets for nine hours a week, one of which is devoted to individual counseling. This program was originally designed for individuals referred via drug court and is sufficiently intensive to accommodate individuals diagnosed with both substance use disorder and a co-occurring mental health disorder. Drug court clients attend for 26 weeks, though the length of stay for other clients is not currently specified.

Standard outpatient care involves counseling for less than nine hours a week, and can serve as an entry-level program or a step-down from more intensive programming. An alumni association featured on the facility's website encourages former clients to participate in speaking and fundraising events, and to attend monthly meetings on topics such as health, managing money, parenting, and finding a job, positioning the facility among the 43 percent of New Jersey facilities that provide some employment counseling or training for clients.

Staff at Damon House includes two doctors, a licensed marriage and family therapist, and certified addiction counselors.

Rehabs.com has received feedback on this facility from one individual at the time of this writing: a negative review with no specific complaints. The outpatient program has more mixed feedback on secondary sites at the time of this writing, with a 3.4 out of five-star average rating based on five reviews on Google[1]. However, the written commentary accompanying reviews indicates that both of the negative comments, as well as some of the positive ones, actually refer to Damon House's residential program in New Brunswick.

The negative reviews allege mismanagement and other misconduct at the facility, which reviewers attribute to the center being a therapeutic community — i.e., run by peers in addiction.
However, others found the therapeutic community and other aspects of care invaluable in their journey to sobriety, and expressed their gratitude to Damon House. "The best thing that could of happen to me this is my first home," Perry wrote in a representative comment.

Nobody is ever turned away from Damon House because they're unable to pay for treatment. As such, the center is among the 73.5 percent of New Jersey–based facilities that offer a sliding fee scale, when applicable.
