ABOUT DAYBREAK YOUTH SERVICES — VANCOUVER
Founded in 1978, Daybreak Youth Services is a nonprofit that operates five facilities in Vancouver and Spokane, which provide residential and outpatient services for teens struggling with substance abuse and dual diagnosis. In Vancouver, services consist of residential treatment for boys aged 12 to 17 and outpatient treatment for boys and girls aged 10 to 18.
Residential services for girls and further outpatient services are available at the facility’s Spokane locations.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
The length of stay in residential treatment varies according to the individual client’s needs. During residential treatment, clients participate in at least one hour of individual counseling weekly, as well as weekend family education sessions, family therapy, education about recovery, training in skills such as mindfulness and coping strategies, and multiple support meetings every week. Residents must also complete daily chores.
Support groups include gender-specific sessions as well as ones related to recovery, spirituality, and mental health. Holistic practices like yoga, art, music, and carpentry classes may also be integrated to facilitate recovery.
Outpatient programs consist of individual and group therapy as well as family education. Group counseling is offered in a variety of courses, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), relapse prevention, and independent living skills.
The treatment team includes medical staff, a psychiatrist, chemical dependency counselors, social workers, and mental health counselors.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The boys’ residential facility has 16 beds. Meals are prepared by staff, who try to accommodate dietary needs that are accompanied by a physician’s note. Recreational activities like CrossFit, basketball, and adventure programs are offered.
