Areas of Specialization
Dual Diagnosis/ Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment
These two terms describe a person who is not only addicted to drugs or alcohol, but also has a mental or emotional illness, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc. Facilities that treat patients with dual-diagnosis or co-occurring disorders provide psychiatric treatment in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation services.
Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.

ABOUT DE PAUL TREATMENT CENTERS — YOUTH CENTER
Based in downtown Portland, Ore., De Paul Treatment Centers is one of Oregon’s 125 private, nonprofit treatment facilities for substance abuse. It was founded in 1977, began serving youth in 1985, and now offers a residential program and outpatient services for adolescents ages 13 to 17. It also treats those with co-occurring disorders. Detox is not available.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
At the core of the De Paul treatment model is Positive Youth Development (PYD), a nationally recognized best practice for treating addiction in adolescents. It is a trauma-focused treatment method that helps adolescents overcome the influence of traumatic events.
The admissions process takes place in person at the facility. Admissions are completed on a first come, first serve basis. Assessments are completed at the time of admission to guide the process. However, clients who are paying with private insurance can only be admitted during the week. Others can be admitted over the weekend.
De Paul delivers its PYD-based treatment through a number of program components including individual, family, and group therapy on topics including social skills development, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and drug abuse education. De Paul’s alternative high school is accredited through Portland Public Schools. When not in treatment or groups, clients spend four hours a day in classes.
General outpatient programs meet once or twice a week and intensive outpatient programs meet three or more times a week, both for three to four months. Treatment includes individual and family counseling. De Paul conducts random weekly urine tests for outpatient clients.
This center’s staff includes licensed addiction counselors, youth and family therapists, teachers, and youth counselors. It is one of 27 (11 percent) of facilities in Oregon that are accredited by CARF.
