ABOUT DICK VAN DYKE ADDICTION TREATMENT CENTER
Located in Ovid, N.Y., which is about an hour outside of Syracuse, the Dick Van Dyke Addiction Treatment Center (ATC) provides short-term residential treatment to adults struggling with substance use disorder. Opened in 1978, it's one of only 42 state-run treatment facilities in New York, which make up just five percent of all facilities in the state.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
According to the Van Dyke ACT website, treatment is abstinence-based and “person centered,” meaning that goals are identified by clients rather than imposed by the program itself. Men and women are treated separately, and the length of treatment depends on the client.
The facility's gender-specific group therapy meetings vary in topic depending on the group. For men’s groups, the focus is on hostility, resentments toward authority, and excessive self-reliance. Women’s groups cover self-esteem and dependency on abusive relationships. Clients also receive individual counseling and attend educational lectures and presentations.
Van Dyke ATC also offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT), including Suboxone for opiate withdrawal, Naltrexone for alcohol cravings, and Antabuse, an alcohol aversion medication that's available in only 31 percent of New York substance abuse treatment facilities.
Wellbutrin can be prescribed for smoking cessation purposes; less than half (41 percent) of substance use treatment facilities in New York offer non-nicotine smoking/tobacco cessation medications to its clients.
The facility's website notes that the treatment team includes a registered nurse and a licensed clinical social worker. The one alum surveyed by Rehabs.com to date gave Van Dyke ATC five out of five stars for its staff's level of training and experience.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Van Dyke ATC is a tobacco-free facility. It maintains 30 beds total, and according to the one alum surveyed by Rehabs.com to date, private rooms are available. That alum also gave the facility five out of five stars for its cleanliness.
