ABOUT DRUG ABUSE COMPREHENSIVE COORDINATING OFFICE - DACCO

Opened in 1973 and located in Tampa, Fla., The Drug Abuse Comprehensive Coordinating Office (DACCO) is a private nonprofit facility, which make up about 42.2 percent of all treatment facilities in Florida; it is one of the 195 (29.2 percent) of Florida facilities that offers residential treatment services. The center is also one of the largest community-based providers of behavioral health treatment in the state, and offers a full continuum of treatment programs includinggender-specific treatment, partial hospitalization (PHP), and intensive outpatient (IOP) services.

DACCO also has a designated unit for medication-assisted, detoxification, which only about 11 percent of Florida treatment centers offer. It offers accommodations for the deaf and hard of hearing upon request.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to Drug Abuse Comprehensive Coordinating Office's website, all prospective clients undergo an initial, 90-minute evaluation to determine an appropriate level of care. Clients who need stabilization and treatment are recommended to DACCO’s gender-specific residential program.

Outpatient options such as day treatment programs and an IOP track are available. DACCO also runs specialty programs for mothers of young children, pregnant women, and those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

Treatment programs combine the principles of the 12 steps with evidence-based practices and education.
Clients typically stay in treatment between three to eight months. Programming includes individual counseling, group sessions, and random drug screenings.

Following initial stabilization and intensive programming, residents participate in vocational training, GED prep, and other specialized services.

When appropriate, DACCO provides medication-assisted therapy (like methadone and Suboxone), and addresses psychiatric troubles through its on-site mental health clinic. DACCO also holds family group sessions and visitation hours on a weekly basis. Aftercare programming includes referral to DACCO’s alumni association as well as ongoing group therapy sessions.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

DACCO's website notes the treatment team includes a medical director, board-certified physicians and nurse practitioners, case managers, along with licensed mental health counselors and certified addiction professionals. The treatment center is one of the 241 (36.1 percent) of Florida treatment facilities that is CARF accredited.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

DACCO offers separate accommodations for men and women. Located on the main campus, the 88-bed women’s facility offers dorm-like bedrooms with shared bathrooms, inside and outside lounging areas, a group dining hall, and laundry facilities. A separate duplex is available for pregnant women and mothers of small children.

The nearby 132-bed facility for men features four large dorm areas with shared bathrooms, a dining hall, an on-site gym, game room, and basketball courts.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The 10 alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing provided mostly positive opinions about DACCO. The eight people who were polled in multiple metrics gave positive ratings for cleanliness and affordability.

The alumni gave more average ratings for other metrics such as holistic offering, counseling options, and when asked if they would recommend DACCO.

Although some alumni differed in opinion on the effectiveness of treatment, many agreed in that the staff were a program strength. “Everyone is supportive and helps you stay clean,” a former client of the outpatient client wrote. “They changed my life.” Referring to her entry into DACCO as the “best thing” she’s ever done, former client Lori felt that being admitted sooner “would have shaved years off (her) drug addicted, unproductive life-style.”

Others, in contrast, described the counseling as “terrible” and even compared the program to “going through the mill."

To date, the 48 people to leave reviews on its Facebook page, which it has the ability to manage, gave an average of 3.9 out of five stars and mixed commentary. [1]

“Staff was very supportive to the patient and their families,” an anonymous loved one wrote. Then again, they also felt that the program itself was “not really up to date on their treatment methods.” Another called the staff “dedicated” and noted its ability to provide “excellent support.”

One reviewer felt that staff “didnot care half as much as they should have” while others questioned the long-term effectiveness of programming. Admitting that DACCO had “lots of good programs,” another Rehabs.com reviewer added that they knew of “many people who have relapsed within days of coming out.”

Overall, the facility was clean and well-run. There was no cost and my son received access to healthcare, eyeglasses, and medication in addition to life skills and AA and NA meetings. The facility was clean and well-run. It offered residents help in finding work, access to healthcare, and other social services. Many of the residents were mandated to be there and many had no desire nor intention of staying clean. As a result, visitation provided them an opportunity to get drugs into the facility.

The facility has a very loving and relaxed atmosphere. It also has a very strict set of rules. You could leave anytime you wanted if your were not in a state program. It is a very good facility and you are treated like family. They celebrate holidays and birthdays also. It is a caring facility with rules and if you do not follow them you will have to leave.
