The Emberwood Center is a CARF-accredited, state-certified community center dedicated to serving Indianapolis' at-risk and needy since 1979.

Formerly known as the Community Addition Services of Indiana (CAS) and now a subsidiary of Mental Health America of Indiana (MHAI), the established center today offers an array of treatment services today for both adults and adolescents, including assessments, gambling treatment, youth development, and intensive outpatient (IOP) programming.

Services provided at Emberwood Center are geared towards adult and teen individuals and their families struggling with behavioral and substance use challenges. Court-ordered adults and school-referred children are amongst those enrolled in Emberwood programming; others may be seeking help, either for themselves or a loved one, for substance use and other addictive habits. The center also sponsors martial arts activities for young adults.

Clients often begin with an assessment. Following its holistic approach to treatment, the center takes “the entire individual into account” which often includes the client’s familial and social environments. Programming is also separated, offering both adults and teens evidence-based outpatient care at a variety of levels. Depending on the severity of their condition and other factors, adult clients may be recommended for educational (Level .5), outpatient (Level 1), or intensive outpatient (IOP) programming (Level 2).

Treatment typically incorporates a combination of individual and group therapy sessions, individualized planning, and support group involvement. Outpatients attend anywhere from 12 weekly sessions over the course of three months to three weekly sessions for four months, however, all are subject to random urine testing. Those who’ve successfully completed treatment are encouraged to attend social support groups for an entire year.

In the youth development program, teens learn about healthy decision making through a series of workshops held across the Indianapolis community. Workshops provide teens with opportunity to share their life experience with others and to participate and quizzes and games following the presentation of material. There are also publicly-funded outpatient programs designed to help teens develop their problem-solving, communication, drug refusal, and anger management skills.

In its newest program, Emberwood Center aims to help adults with compulsive gambling issues. Similar to addiction services, the gambling track offers assessments, individualized planning, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

The Emberwood Center employs an administrative and therapeutic staff dedicated to “providing addiction and resources on addiction,” The center is also one of only 84 (27.5 percent of) facilities with CARF accreditation in the state of Indiana.

Rehabs.com has yet to receive any reviews from the center’s alumni, affiliated friends or family members, or staff, however, the single individual to have shared written commentary in addition to a star-rating across secondary sources warned others: “Avoid at all costs, unless you enjoy dealing in uncertainty and ignorance....”[1]

The Emberwood Center is one of just 184 (60.3 percent) centers in the state of Indiana to accept Medicaid as well as one of 216 (70.8 percent) that offers sliding scale fees.
