ABOUT EXCEL CENTER - FORT WORTH
A specialized facility, Excel Center of Fort Worth offers outpatient-based treatment services for children and teens ages five to 18, who are experiencing emotional and behavioral problems, including substance abuse. An affiliate of Millwood Hospital, Excel Center provides a less restrictive alternative to inpatient care. Offerings include a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP).
In the state, the center is among 26.7 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities with tailored programs for adolescents. It's also among 15.1 percent that offer day treatment/PHP and among 53.8 percent of facilities to offer an IOP.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
To qualify for admission to its programs, Excel Center provides free assessments on-site Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pending the outcome of this process, children and teens may enroll in the PHP or IOP. According to the facility’s website, either option is considered a “middle step” for youth transitioning from inpatient treatment or for those who are not benefiting from traditional outpatient care.
Upon admission, a child is assigned a therapist/case manager, nurse, and psychiatrist. Each participant attends an appropriate age-related group in their program. When attending the PHP or IOP, the client also will be enrolled in the Excel Center charter school during treatment and receive free transportation within a 25-mile radius of the facility.
The PHP, also referred to as day treatment, delivers four hours of daily group therapy, consisting of process groups and coping skills education. The curriculum also includes family therapy, individualized treatment with a psychiatrist, medication management, and clinical case management. The PHP operates five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The IOP offers three hours of daily group therapy and variations of PHP elements. Clients receive individualized treatment with the psychiatrist once per week and attend the program Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
On average, patients stay in the programs for four to six weeks. However, discharge ultimately depends on their progress. The organization also operates a one-day Diversionary Referral Program for first time offenders for juveniles for truancy, tobacco, curfew violations, and anger management issues.
Within the state of Texas, Excel Center is among 27.6 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities accredited by The Joint Commission. According to the organization’s website, the treatment team includes therapists, nurses, teachers, and psychiatrists.
