A specialized facility, Excel Center of Fort Worth offers outpatient-based treatment services for children and teens ages five to 18, who are experiencing emotional and behavioral problems, including substance abuse. An affiliate of Millwood Hospital, Excel Center provides a less restrictive alternative to inpatient care. Offerings include a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP).

In the state, the center is among 26.7 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities with tailored programs for adolescents. It's also among 15.1 percent that offer day treatment/PHP and among 53.8 percent of facilities to offer an IOP.

To qualify for admission to its programs, Excel Center provides free assessments on-site Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pending the outcome of this process, children and teens may enroll in the PHP or IOP. According to the facility’s website, either option is considered a “middle step” for youth transitioning from inpatient treatment or for those who are not benefiting from traditional outpatient care.

Upon admission, a child is assigned a therapist/case manager, nurse, and psychiatrist. Each participant attends an appropriate age-related group in their program. When attending the PHP or IOP, the client also will be enrolled in the Excel Center charter school during treatment and receive free transportation within a 25-mile radius of the facility.

The PHP, also referred to as day treatment, delivers four hours of daily group therapy, consisting of process groups and coping skills education. The curriculum also includes family therapy, individualized treatment with a psychiatrist, medication management, and clinical case management. The PHP operates five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The IOP offers three hours of daily group therapy and variations of PHP elements. Clients receive individualized treatment with the psychiatrist once per week and attend the program Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

On average, patients stay in the programs for four to six weeks. However, discharge ultimately depends on their progress. The organization also operates a one-day Diversionary Referral Program for first time offenders for juveniles for truancy, tobacco, curfew violations, and anger management issues.

Within the state of Texas, Excel Center is among 27.6 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities accredited by The Joint Commission. According to the organization’s website, the treatment team includes therapists, nurses, teachers, and psychiatrists.

Rehabs.com has yet to receive alumni feedback to date. However, at the time of this writing, Excel Center received moderately favorable coverage on secondary sites: 3.3 out of five stars based on 24 reviews from a mix of alumni and their loved ones on Google; and single one-star review on Yelp. [1] [2] Positive reviewers, although limited in commentary, reported a good experience and outcome. However, unsatisfied reviewers offered more criticisms about the facility, such as rude staff, lack of staff support, and ineffective treatment.

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date submitted mixed opinions about the facility. The anonymous reviewer gave perfect five stars for facility cleanliness and upkeep, as well as four stars for connectivity/visitor policy, likelihood to recommend, and staff experience and training. However, the loved one assigning two stars to affordability, counseling options, and family involvement.

The reviewer cited “unity of staff, clean surroundings, concern for patient” as strengths, but noted “Variety of diet poor choices, security not always alert.” And they warned that “some patients seem able to fool counselors .effort IS put into understanding patient needs but is short of preparation for life outside facility.”

Of note, many of the Google reviewers referred to in the section above on alumni feedback were loved ones. They, too, offered mixed viewpoints. Four-star reviewer A.H. wrote: “It's a great place for helping with addiction, anger, anxiety, etc. Although the treatment could have been better, the Excel Center's treatment was overall helpful.” However, others cited negative experiences, including misdiagnosis and staff rudeness, such as T.S., who wrote: “Terrible care. Would absolutely not put my child here again.”

According to its website, Excel Center accepts a range of insurance plans. The Diversionary Referral Program fee is $150.
