Rehabs.com 360 Guide
Founded in 1988 and headquartered in New York's Financial District, Exponents is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides outpatient recovery and education services for individuals struggling with substance use disorder and HIV/AIDS, as well as certified training for prospective recovery coaches and substance abuse counselors.
Walk-ins are accepted.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Exponents places a strong emphasis on peer support: on most programs, trained peers provide mentoring and co-learning support, to empower clients to pursue their own paths to recovery.
Exponents' chemical dependency counseling is an outpatient, medically supervised program, available at a variety of intensities: primarily, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) and general outpatient care. The organization also offers a Suboxone program for individuals struggling with opioid addiction.
Treatment is strengths-based, safe, and empowering. There's a dedicated treatment track for LGBTQ clients, and a Seeking Safety course is offered for those struggling with PTSD and addiction. The core program includes a range of modalities, including gender-specific group therapy, parenting classes, anger management groups, recovery skills and life skills groups, vocational services, and trauma support.
The ARRIVE program is an eight-week course that helps participants to monitor and seek ongoing treatment for HIV while learning to identify challenges relating to substance abuse and mental health; there's also an optional eight-week addendum to the ARRIVE program.
Exponents also offers GED training, vocational services, healthcare enrollment support, recovery coaching services, and a peer-led prisoner re-entry program.
The substance abuse program is led by a social worker and substance abuse counselor, and also uses the services of a psychiatrist. Many staff members are bilingual in Spanish and English.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
The chemical dependency counseling program runs 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and includes transportation services. Exponents also runs a clothing closet and provides nutritious snacks and meals.

A handful of staff members complained of organizational problems and difficulties with limited resources, springing from the organization's nonprofit status. However, most staff spoke very highly of Exponents' mission and their work with clients. "Excellent facility, excellent students, excellent material," one reviewer wrote in a representative review on Indeed.com.
Exponents' services are subsidized by federal, state, and private funding, though the facility's website does not state whether there remains any cost to clients. The single individual polled by Rehabs.com to date, a staff member, gave the facility five out of five stars for the fairness of its price point, but added that private insurance was not accepted.
