ABOUT FARNHAM FAMILY SERVICES

Established in 1971, Farnham Family Services is a state-licensed, private nonprofit organization that serves residents of Oswego County and surrounding areas in New York who seek recovery from and assistance with issues of substance abuse and behavioral health. The center offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP) and standard outpatient (OP) basis. The facility also offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for clients struggling with opioid dependency.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to its website, Farnham Family Services specializes in “recovery-oriented, evidence and strength-based treatment services.” The process begins with a comprehensive assessment along with medical and psychosocial evaluations, which results in a customized plan for each client.

Outpatient services for adults typically include individualized and group counseling for substance abuse clients and those with a dual diagnosis as well as psycho-educational sessions and recovery groups. The center also offers services for adolescents as well as counseling for families, couples, and anyone affected by someone’s substance use. Outpatient care includes case management and referrals to other types or levels of medical care, as needed.

The center founded the first Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) in Oswego County. Services include medication-assisted-treatment (MAT), individual counseling, group therapy, family counseling, case management, and referrals to other services, as required.

Farnham Family Services utilizes Suboxone to minimize the discomfort of opioid withdrawal and help curb cravings. Clients must be referred by their primary clinician, undergo a physical with medical history, and be evaluated by the prescribing professional to participate. In New York, Farnham is among the 61.3 percent of facilities to administer Suboxone.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Farnham Family Services is licensed by the NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services. The treatment staff includes medical professionals, licensed and master’s level social workers, registered nurses, and certified alcohol and substance abuse counselors (CASACs).

Farnham Family Services is among 10.6 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities in New York with a Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities - CARF accreditation.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two anonymous Rehabs.com survey respondents to date reported different recovery experiences – one highly successful and the other unsuccessful. The former client who achieved positive results awarded perfect five-star ratings for treatment effectiveness, affordability, counseling options, family participation, holistic offerings, likelihood to recommend, and staff experience and training. They described the program as “Personable, Comfortable, Knowledgeable” and wrote: “The team at Farnham Family Services were great! They truly helped me manage my addiction problems.”

The other alum assigned one out of five stars for treatment effectiveness, though awarded four stars for the frequency of counseling. The gave three stars for holistic offerings and one star for individual counseling, overall group counseling, staff experience and training, and staff support. The reviewer felt misled by the center and wrote: “Most people get cleaned up to keep there jobs. Did not help me out at all.”

On secondary site Google, Farnham Family Services received moderately favorable coverage to date. [1] Two positive reviewers, who rated the facility perfect five stars and four out of five stars, praised the center’s dedication to its mission, counselors, and treatment methods, whereas the one-star reviewer considered it “a big money scam.” Nonetheless, Bill wrote: “I believe Farnham is an important resource for those in Oswego looking to overcome an addiction to opiates” and added: “The groups and counseling along with methadone have all played a role in getting and keeping me off drugs.”

WHAT STAFF SAY

On secondary review site Indeed, former staff members expressed moderately positive opinions to date. [2] Although one reviewer rated the center four out of five stars and referenced the availability of support when needed, they wrote there was a “High emphasis on discharging clients at a fast and sometimes uncomfortable pace.” The other reviewer offered an overall rating of three stars, praised the center’s “positive and strong mission,” but described Farnham as “an outpatient substance abuse clinic with good intentions, but poor execution.”

FINANCING

Farnham Family Services accepts most insurances as well as Medicaid and Medicaid. In New York, the facility is among the 45.7 percent of facilities to accept Medicaid. Another option is self-payment on a sliding-fee basis. The facility’s webpage maintains: “We never refuse treatment to anyone due to an inability to pay for treatment services."
