About the Facility

Reviewed by Our Contributors

Founded in 1991, Feather River Men’s Center (FRMC), located in Live Oak, Calif.. is a nonprofit, faith-based residential recovery facility. It seeks to help men struggling with substance abuse by, in the words of its website, “conquer life controlling addictions, restore lives and reunite families.” Medically supervised detox is not available on-site. Within the state, FRMC is among 33.9 percent of substance abuse treatment facilities that provide long-term non-hospital residential care.

FRMC provides 12 to 18 months of treatment using a five-phase curriculum. Methods include daily classes in combination with work programs. Clients complete various projects, such as house repairs, lawn and yard care, house painting, trash removal, and area cleanups. They also participate in various spiritual and social activities such as Bible study.

An article by the Gridley Herald, a newspaper located in nearby Gridley, Calif., reported that clients are tasked to complete 15 to 18 hours of community service each week along with attending church services and activities. Two clients are responsible for grocery shopping each week with a staff member.

The article further described a client’s weekly schedule: on Monday nights, clients attend Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings; Tuesday nights, clients work on Craftsmen for Christ projects; Wednesday nights, they worship at the center for an hour; Thursdays, clients clean the church and enjoy pizza; and Fridays, they relax and go to the movies. Saturday and Sunday nights are for church services.

A doctor serves as the center’s medical director. The Gridley Herald article referenced above reported that the center is staffed 24/7.

FRMC is in a small house set in urban location. The facility accommodates 12 men at a time aged 18 and over. The center has a weight room, basketball court, horseshoes, and a garden. The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date gave four out of five stars for the facility's cleanliness and upkeep.

Rehabs.com has yet to receive alumni feedback to date. At the time of this writing, FRMC received highly favorable feedback on its Facebook page, which the organization can manage: 4.7 out of five stars from 22 reviews. [1] Of note, 19 of the reviews (86 percent) were maximum five-star ratings. Reviewers (alumni, loved ones, others) frequently praised the program’s treatment effectiveness and faith-based focus. In a representative review, alum Paul wrote: “It changed my life I haven’t touched meth in over nine years praise Jesus and the crew at FRMC.”

The one anonymous loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date submitted a mixed-to-negative review about FRMC. They gave two stars for the facility's overall effectiveness, though offered four stars for its affordability and the amount of family participation, as well as three stars for the likelihood they'd recommend the facility and treatment of co-occurring disorders. However, this individual assigned two stars for the facility's visitor policy, counseling options, holistic offerings, and staff experience and training. “It keeps men from going to prison and keep them going to church,” they wrote.

The FRMC website notes: “The program is funded purely by donations from individuals and businesses within the surrounding communities and beyond.” The Gridley Herald reported that money earned by clients for their work also helps support the program. The article goes on to say many men arrive at the clinic “with the clothes on their back.”
