ABOUT FRIENDSHIP HOUSE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN INDIANS OF SAN FRANCISCO

The Friendship House Association of American Indians of San Francisco is one of the oldest treatment organizations dedicated to serving Native Americans struggling with substance abuse. The Friendship House provides a long-term residential program for adults, a specialized residential program for pregnant women and mothers with children, extended care program, as well as an outpatient-based program for youths (ages 8 to 24). The facility does not provide on-site detoxification.

In California, the facility is among the 4.8 percent of facilities to accommodate client children and 29.7 percent of facilities to offer specialIzed programming for pregnant women.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Upon admission, clients may undergo an initial assessment to identify individual client needs. To immerse clients into the program, Friendship House's treatment program begins with a 30-day blackout period. During this time, clients do not have any contact with anyone outside of the program.

Friendship House combines Western evidence-based treatment methods with cultural immersion into Native American practices. The residential program for adults entails a structured schedule of group and individual counseling, as well as traditional talking circles to confront emotional and mental issues that may contribute to addictive behavior. Clients also participate in a Native American-inspired 12-step program.

Along with evidence-based methods, clients also participate in traditional sweat lodges, smudging ceremonies, and powwow dancing ceremonies. In addition to educational classes on chemical dependency and developing coping skills, the Friendship House also provides G.E.D. preparation classes and testing for clients through a local charter school.

Located in Oakland, Calif., the Women's Lodge provides specialized programming for expectant mothers and mothers with young children (up to age five). Offering similar programming as the adult residential program, the Women's Lodge also provides parenting classes, child development sessions, family counseling, and assists with family reunification. Both primary residential treatment programs last up to six months, though women may stay in the Women's Lodge for up to one year.

Once a client completes the primary residential program, clients may choose to enroll in the extended care program. Lasting for up to an additional six months, the extended care program assists clients to locate housing, resume development, job training, and education placement. Clients continue to enjoy access the counseling sessions, case management, and relapse prevention classes.

The outpatient program for youth entails substance abuse education classes, life skills training, powwow dancing and drumming, and violence prevention classes. In addition, the program provides academic tutoring and mentoring.
