ABOUT GIBAULT COUNSELING INC
From its founding in 1921, Gibault Counseling Inc. has developed into a large organization of behavioral and psychiatric services for youth between the ages of 6 and 21 and families in Terre Haute, Ind. Today, Gibault applies a trauma-informed approach throughout residential, day treatment, and outpatient services in assisting children dealing with behavioral health disorders, development and intellectual disabilities, and sexually maladaptive issues.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Programming at the established organization is designed to treat a wide range of youth populations. Services begin with a treatment plan that is revised monthly to meet each child’s ongoing needs and make use of the Stages of Change model.
There are two levels of residential care - a Child and Adolescent Residential Environment (CARE) program and a psychiatric residential treatment facility (PRTF) - that work with children who have mood disorders, anxiety, oppositional defiant disorder, trauma, sexual abuse, and other issues. Children aged 14 and older considered sexually maladaptive attend a specialized curriculum of groups in sexuality, trauma processing, and relapse prevention.
Across all three of these programs, treatment may include a combination of life skills training, evidence-based therapies such as motivational interviewing (MI) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), as well as recreational activity, psychoeducational groups, non-denominational spiritual services, clinical assessments, and aftercare.
In the Autism Spectrum Behavioral Learning Environment (ABLE) program, treatment focuses on teaching children to improve their communication skills and better manage sensory overload. Day treatment services take place in an on-campus accredited schools, helping children who were expelled or suspended overcome any academic and emotional difficulties they may be facing. Gibault also runs an emergency shelter care (ESC) program that provides children with a safe environment for up to 20 days.
All children meet with a master’s level therapist for one-on-one, group, and family therapy sessions. Those receiving medication meet with the center’s psychiatrist for monthly consultations. Other staff are trained in social work, education, and mental health.

Each residential facility is staffed 24 hours a day. The PRTF has a staff-to-client ratio of 1:4.
