Since 1969, Grandview Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization based in Pasadena, Calif., has been treating adults struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction. The facility provides a residential program and sober living houses for men, making it among 48.6 percent of treatment centers throughout the state to offer specially tailored programs for adult men. The center also provides outpatient treatment for both adult men and women.

Upon admission, each client is screened and evaluated for staff to develop an individualized treatment plan. The facility’s approach focuses on 12-step recovery and encourages all clients to get a sponsor.

Clients also engage in individual, family, and group counseling. Groups are small for more intimate, personalized care and may cover such topics as spirituality, art therapy, anger management, life skills, meditation, relapse prevention.

Clients also may utilize specific evidence-based practices such as Seeking Safety for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Hazelden for co-occurring mental health disorders, and Prime Solutions for general recovery. Staff members are also trained to administer eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.

During residential treatment, weekdays begin around 6:30 a.m. and end at 11 p.m. There are three phases of treatment and, as clients progress, they are allowed more privileges, such as weekend visits and passes with staff approval. In the third phase, clients are encouraged to search for jobs, work, or attend school.

All clients receive aftercare planning as well. Upon completion of the residential program, most clients move on to the sober living facility while they attend outpatient treatment, which offers individual and group counseling and requires regular 12-step meeting attendance.

The Grandview Foundation employs a board-certified medical doctor, therapists, and counselors to administer treatment including a licensed marriage and family therapist. The client to counselor ratio is 8:1.

Clients live in the Garfield Heights residential community in serene settings. Grandview Foundation owns two large landmark homes, which accommodate a total of 39 clients. Photos posted on the facility's website at the time of this writing indicatedshared rooms, landscaped garden areas with tranquil fountains and stone paths, outdoor sitting, dining, and meeting areas, large commercial kitchens, and comfortable indoor meeting spaces. The sober living home, which is located next door to the residential treatment facility, has beds for 14 males.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY has yet to receive alumni feedback to date. On secondary review sites, Grandview Foundation received positive feedback to date: 4.7 out of five stars based on 29 votes on Facebook, which the organization can manage, and 4.2 stars based on six reviews on Google. {^1] [2]

The preponderance of perfect five-star reviewers praised the caring staff and frequently described the life-changing results they achieved through treatment, such as Daniell on Facebook: “Grandview changed my life !!!... The people I was able to met there will always be a part of my recovery and I give them all credit to who I am today….”. Israel on Google added: “Very, very helpful WONDERFUL counselors a lot of resources….great program….they help you step by step.” An isolated negative comment concerned lack of communication and responsiveness, although it should be noted that several who offered four- and three-star ratings did not explain why.

The sole loved one polled by to date had mainly favorable opinions of the facility. N.A. was impressed by the facility’s counseling options, which they rated a perfect five stars. N.A. also gave four-star ratings for a wide cross-section of metrics, from affordability to cleanliness, connectivity, family participation, holistic offerings, level of staff experience and training, and the likelihood they would recommend the program.

Although they listed staff as a strength of the facility, N.A. criticized it for having "too many court appointed residents...they didn't come voluntarily and their attitude shows it," though added: "But the program did well."

Grandview Foundation does not publish details about costs and coverage. However, its website claims that it is “the lowest cost private provider of drug and alcohol recovery services in all of Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley” and that clients should be treated “regardless of their ability to pay.”
