Areas of Specialization

  • Residential Treatment
Residential treatment programs provide housing (food and meals) in addition to treatment for substance abuse. Some facilities offer only short-term residential treatment, some offer only long-term treatment and others offer both, ranging from a few days to many months, based on patient needs.

  • Medical Detoxification
Drugs and alcohol have widespread effects throughout your body, including but not limited to the addiction and/or physical/psychological dependence that develops with substance abuse over time. Many organ systems are affected by addiction and will react to withdrawal. The term “medical detoxification” means that there is a trained and licensed medical professional onsite to monitor your vital signs and protect your physical and emotional health as your body goes through withdrawal.

Based in the coastal city of Petoskey, Mich., Harbor Hall is a nonprofit organization that provides a full continuum of treatment services for substance abuse. It is also one of the only 223 (46.6 percent) Michigan treatment centers with programming for co-occurring mental health disorders. Offerings include non-medical detox, residential treatment, and outpatient treatment, all of which are designed for men ages 18 and over, placing it amongst the just 219 (45.7 percent) facilities in the state with gender-specific programming. Additionally, transitional living support and specialized treatment tracks for women, adolescents, families, and health professionals are available.

Male clients experiencing withdrawal symptoms typically begin their treatment with supervised detox. Although clients receive 24-hour monitoring, and medical personnel are on-call, treatment is usually based on social support. Once stabilized, clients may move on to residential treatment, the duration of which is between 28 and 90 days.

Residential treatment is highly structured and personalized according to each client’s individual assessment. Therapy, most of which is conducted in a group setting, addresses relapse prevention, decision making, social, and life skills, as well as any co-occurring mental health disorders. Residential treatment is offered to men exclusively.

For those seeking step-down treatment or a more flexible level of care, the center offers outpatient treatment for men, women, and adolescents. Treatment is trauma-informed and conducted in gender-specific environments, utilizing modalities such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Family counseling is also available on an outpatient basis. Transitional living, a 26-week program, is available to those who complete treatment but may benefit from ongoing support.

According its website, the center’s treatment team includes licensed social workers, Ph.D. and master’s level clinicians, licensed alcohol and drug counselors, nurses, and a spiritual counselor. In fact, 97.1 percent of all substance abuse treatment facilities in Michigan have continuing education requirements for staff.

Harbor Hall’s residential facility is located on a tree-lined street in a residential neighborhood. The center, which has a homelike look and feel, can accommodate up to 38 men. This suggests a high level of availability, given that on average, 18 individuals inhabit a residential treatment facility at a time, as of 2016.

Reviews from alumni polled by Rehabs.com are limited, with two positive takes on the quality of treatment. Joy gave Harbor Hall’s treatment effectiveness five out of five stars and characterized the center’s offerings as the “Best drug treatment services.” K.V. also gave the center’s treatment effectiveness five out of five stars. “Saved my life,” K.V. reported to Rehabs.com.

Reviews left on third-party sites are mostly positive as well. Based on 28 reviews submitted to Harbor Hall’s Facebook page, the facility received an average rating of 4.6 out of five stars.[1] Note, Harbor Hall manages its own page and has the ability to vet comments and reviews. “I believe that Harbor Hall and their staff truly saved my life by giving me the proper education and tools to over come my alcoholism and maintain my sobriety,” R.G.F. wrote in a representative five-star review.

Additionally, on Google to date, there are eight ratings for this facility that average 3.5 out of five stars.[2] Four-star reviewer A.W. characterized the program as "tough," but "Excellent," and M.L.H. added, "Amazing staff! Always friendly and helpful." One-star reviewer B.R., on the other hand, noted feeling mistreated and disrespected.

One anonymous loved one polled by Rehabs.com provided a two-star rating for their cousin’s treatment, but admitted that they did “not know very much about it.” This loved one awarded high, four-star ratings to many other surveyed categories, though, including exercise options, affordability, staff level of experience and training, and whether or not the treatment was worth the cost.

The two staff members surveyed by Rehabs.com shared differing opinions of Harbor Hall and its offerings. K.S. gave the center’s treatment effectiveness two stars and described the center as “bottom of the barrel.” K.S. added, “They are all about money and not helping anyone.” The other anonymous staff member admitted that the center was “small” and “behind the times a bit,” but commended the facility for having a “good understanding of how specific issues in the area effect substance abuse.” This staffer awarded five stars for treatment effectiveness and the connectivity policy, but only two stars for holistic offerings and treatment of co-occurring disorders.

The center describes its care as “affordable,” but does not list specific prices. Medicaid (accepted by 72.2 percent of treatment centers in the state) and some private insurance plans are accepted, and financial assistance is available. One loved one and one staff member polled on center affordability to date both awarded four out of five stars.
