Review by Rehabs.com Contributors

Founded in 1966, Harbor Recovery Center (formerly Harbor House) is located in Fort Smith, Arkansas. It provides residential treatment to adult men struggling with substance abuse disorder, along with outpatient services, a six- to 12-week intensive outpatient program (IOP), and specialized services for those with co-occurring post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or chronic pain.

There is a similar residential facility for women, called Gateway Recovery Center, nearby. On-site detox services are not available at either location.

Treatment at Harbor Recovery Center begins with a comprehensive evaluation. Special attention is placed on identifying signs of PTSD, depression, and anxiety in order to more appropriately address those complexities during treatment.

Harbor Recovery Center integrates 12-step principles, alternative practices, and evidence-based approaches during treatment. This is done using a mixture of hypnotherapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), motivational enhancement therapy (MET), and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The facility has 30-, 60-, and 90-day residential programs.

In a typical week of residential care, men participate in at least six hours of interactive group counseling, and one or more hours of individual therapy. They also have at least five hours of recovery support groups (e.g. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), or SMART Recovery). Clients are also involved in up to three hours of physical activity to promote general health.

After the residential program, if needed, clients can continue their care at Cornerstone, the organization’s transitional living facility for men, where they can stay for up to two years. During this time, they can participate in the residential/work program which allows them to develop connections in the community.

According to the facility's website, each member of its all-male staff has at least seven years of experience as a substance abuse counselor.

While there is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its living arrangements and related offerings, the four former clients polled by Rehabs.com to date rated them fairly highly.

Accommodations and amenities: 3.6/5 stars

The four alumni surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave Harbor Recovery Center mostly positive reviews. They indicated that the facility was clean and well-kept, and that staff were helpful and knowledgeable.

Facility Cleanliness and upkeep: 3.8/5 stars
Staff's level of training and experience: 4/5 stars

Former clients also noted that they appreciated that staff members were in recovery. In a representative review, Clayton wrote: "This is a decent facility. They are government based, ran and operated by recovering addicts".

Two alumni did report that they felt the facility was understaffed, including John who noted: "It would be much better with more staff members."

The rehab earned average ratings of 4.1 out of five stars based on eight Google reviews[1] and 4.9 out of five stars based on 49 Facebook reviews[2] (which the facility can manage). Former clients across both sites described Harbor Recovery Center as an effective gender-specific program with talented staff and a comfortable environment. "I owe my sobriety to Harbor House," Trae wrote in a representative review. "An amazing staff, and amazing clients. If you want recovery, you will get it here."

The sole loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date, an anonymous 40 to 59-year old female, gave Harbor Recovery Center four or five out of five stars for its family participation, its cleanliness, its counseling options, and its exercise and leisure activities. However, she also noted that it was a "small facility with limited resources," and gave it two stars for its connectivity, its affordability, and its treatment of co-occurring disorders. When asked, on a scale from one to five, if she would recommend the facility, the reviewer gave a rating of four.

According to the facility’s website, Harbor Recovery Center accepts most insurance plans. The facility's certified application counselors can help applicants find ways of affording treatment through insurance and the Affordable Care Act.

Employs mostly people who were addicts. Small facility with limited resources . We used it because it was close to home. It was an hour away, while other treatment facilities were over two hours away

This is a decent facility. They are government based, ran and operated by recovering addicts. They are based off a twelve step program and use those steps and recovery stories for clients. At the time I was there some of the staff could use some more training in professionalism.

They have all had experience with recovery. Way understaffed. It would be much better with more staff members.

The residential treatment and transitional living experience in addition to counselor's encouragement to make better decisions on a consistent basis by working a 12 step program empowered me to start a journey in recovery.
