Harmony House Philosophy

Harmony House is a recovery house that provides men with a supportive, clean and sober living environment. Through taking responsibility and learning to live in harmony with self and others, a lasting recovery is possible. Harmony House is primarily a setting for high functioning individuals age 25 and over.

We view addiction as a chronic illness requiring long-term support and management. We assist men in learning to manage their disease and in building a foundation for lasting recovery.

We believe in utilizing state of the art approaches in addressing addictions, including a supportive, success based approach and a weekly relapse prevention group. The use of Suboxone and anti-craving medications are supported where appropriate, with secure storage and monitoring of medication compliance. Most psychiatric medications are accepted.

In our experience, relapse is often associated with untreated co-occurring mental illness, such as depression or anxiety. Trauma, grief, and medical issues are also common issues contributing to relapse. Due to the seriousness and complexity addictions, participation in outpatient treatment is required. At Harmony House, we work in cooperation with treatment and medical professionals to help residents prevent relapse and develop a lifestyle that supports physical, emotional, social and spiritual health. We do not provide treatment services.

Areas of Specialization

  • Client & Family Support Groups
Group therapy is a vital component of addiction recovery treatment, considered as important and effective (sometimes even more so) than individual therapy. Benefits include reducing isolation and loneliness and providing the opportunity to learn from others in recovery. In the addiction setting, group therapy is run by trained professionals who guide participants toward a shared goal of recovery.

  • 12-Step
The term “12 Step Program” describes a way to recover from addiction that is based on the model developed by Alcoholics Anonymous. Many drug and alcohol treatment centers base their treatment on 12 steps – the first three of which are situational, the next four addressing the practical issues created by the addiction, followed by two steps focused on making amends for hurting others. Steps 10 and 11 involve a deeper examination of the previous steps and the final step is focused on helping others avoid and recover from addiction.

Established in 2005 and located in Levittown, Penn., Harmony House is a sober living facility for men ages 25 and older. It is one of 114 facilities in the state to offer long-term residential treatment. While the facility is open to first-time treatment participants or those who have relapsed, the website notes that the program is “primarily a setting for high-functioning men... If you're are still wavering a lot, that's okay but our program may not be right for you.”

A minimum 90-day stay is required, but some clients may remain for four months or more. The facility requires that clients have a "way of supporting themselves (job, disability, family support)" and does not accept men currently on probation or parole. Only 46.8 percent of Pennsylvania facilities offer services tailored specifically to men.

Harmony House views addiction as a chronic but treatable illness and supports 12-step methods combined with evidenced-based practices. Other than a weekly relapse prevention group, the facility itself does not offer treatment services, however clients must be enrolled in an outpatient program during their stay. Harmony House staff work with treatment and medical professionals to ensure that outside treatment services are being utilized. Residents are drug tested regularly.

Residents work their way through a five-level system, earning more independence as they complete each tier. Clients must actively participate in daily activities conducive to their recovery, including participating in 12-step meetings, working with a sponsor, getting a job or going to school, attending all required counseling and medical appointments, cooking dinner, and participating in regular household chores.

There is currently no information provided by the facility regarding its treatment staff. M.R., an alum surveyed by Rehabs.com, was not pleased with the management, claiming the owner had “no control over her recovery house and no one to oversee what is going on.”

S.N., a loved one, gave the management positive feedback and wrote: “The owner, although not always on site, always stayed on top of the clients. Communicating and keeping control over the home.”

Images on the facility’s website indicated a simple home with an outdoor garden and weight-lifting area, as well as a spacious backyard. While the facility is drug-free, the website does note that some psychiatric medications and benzodiazepines may be permitted, along with Suboxone/methadone for opiate withdrawal. Food and personal items are not covered in the cost of rent and will not be provided by the facility.

To date, alumni response to Harmony house has been mixed. Of the three alumni who submitted reviews to Rehabs.com, two were negative and one positive. The negative reviews took exception to the quality of the accommodations, including M.R., who wrote: "You'll find absouletly NO HARMONY in this place. Dilapidated, filthy, bug infested house. Owner does NOTHING to upkeep this house." The facility offered an official response to this complaint, writing, "I'm very sorry that your stay at Harmony House did not work out. The house is well maintained and of course there are no bedbugs."

J.B. disagreed, writing: "Harmony house has been the best choice I have made as a housing solution so I can further my sobriety." He gave five out of five stars for the accommodations and treatment effectiveness while praising the house counselor.

On Google, Harmony House received an average rating of 3.2 out of five stars based on 19 reviews to date. [1] Reviews were mixed, with some former clients praising the program, such as Mike, who wrote that the program “provides the structure, reasonable compassion that one needs in early recovery while you develop your freedom from self.” Complaints echoed those provided by Rehabs.com reviewers about cleanliness; however, it was clear that one of the respondents was the same Rehabs.com reviewer, M.R.

S.N., the one loved one polled by Rehabs.com to date, praised Harmony House. His son stayed at the facility for six months. “The home was clean and neat every time I went to visit,” they wrote. “The other residents were always concerned about each other and kept each other accountable.” On Google, Jessica gave the facility a five-star review and wrote: "My brother spent 6 months here and I visited often. He was happy, sober, and supported."[1]

According to its website, rent at Harmony House is $170 per week. However, if residents pay by the month, there is a discount that equals $600 a month. The first week of rent is payable upon admission and then every Friday during residency.

When I arrived my room was filthy, the sheets hadn't been cleaned, the entire house was filthy, dilapidated, and ridden with bed bugs. The upstairs toilet leaks dirty toilet water into the downstairs bathroom, all over the sink and toilet. The backyard is filled with old broken furniture thrown about and trash piled on the one side of the house. The owner lives in Mexico and makes no mention of this fact in the interview process. I'm very upset with how I was welcomed and the living conditions. There was not one mention of the bed bugs until all of my belongings were already inside, very upsetting!

Harmony house has been the best choice I have made as a housing solution so I can further my sobriety. The house is in a great neighborhood where there are no drugs that I have seen making the environment choice of being sober a good one. The house itself is in great shape, actually the nicest house I have lived in and if there are any problems it is fixed as soon as it is mentioned. The house owner is involved more than any owner I have met and she genuinely cares and is there for your best interest and willing to go the whole way for you if you are willing to put the work in to be sober. The house counselor is the same where she is there for you if you have any problems or issues and will help you work through them. The house manager is also very fair and helps to provide a stable, safe environment inside the house. The house is there to be connected through a sober community and it is made sure that it is and I feel is a great place to start. It is in walking distance to meetings and has stores all around to try to find employment. Most important is the community inside the house willing to help each other where I have found it a safe place to talk to people about anything I was going through and they were there to help me. All in all I would recommend harmony house for anyone serious about getting sober as I didn't picture myself living here but I am glad I made the choice to.

My son lived in this home for 6 months and it was the most clean time he had. The owner, although not always on site, always stayed on top of the clients. Communicating and keeping control over the home. The home was clean and neat every time I went to visit. The other residents were always concerned about each other and kept each other accountable. One of the few homes, not in Philly, where suboxone is permitted. Many of our addict children need medication and this house understood that. My son gained responsibility and respect at the home through caring intervention. I highly recommend it for men that are serious about recovery.

You\'ll find absouletly NO HARMONY in this place. Dilapidated, filthy, bug infested house. Owner does NOTHING to upkeep this house. She lives in Mexico and interviews potential recovering addicts on the phone. She has no control over her recovery house and no one to oversee what is going on in the house resulting in tremendous turnover. DON\'T EVER even consider this house for recovery!!!!!!!!!

Official Facility Response

I'm very sorry that your stay at Harmony House did not work out. The house is well maintained and of course there are no bedbugs. If in doubt, please contact me the owner to see for yourself. Sometimes residents are upset about their personal circumstances and feel the need to lash out. This is unfortunate but understandable.
