ABOUT HARTFORD DISPENSARY: HENDERSON-JOHNSON CLINIC MMTP
Hartford Dispensary has been in operation for almost 150 years. It's a private, nonprofit behavioral healthcare organization that operates nine outpatient clinics in the greater Hartford area in central Connecticut. The Henderson-Johnson Clinic, located blocks from the Connecticut River in northern Hartford, provides outpatient medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for individuals struggling with opioid addiction.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
The main treatment offering at the Hartford Dispensary is a methadone maintenance program for recovery from opioid addiction. Treatment is offered in the long-term: the facility's website notes that clients may be required to continue taking methadone indefinitely.
Methadone can be taken daily, by mouth, and has euphoria-blocking properties that make a return to opiate-use undesirable. Once the client has got their cravings under control, they can comfortably begin to address the other aspects of addiction and recovery, including any criminal behavior as well as emotional difficulties.
The facility's website notes: "Ten years of Hartford Dispensary data has consistently shown an over 84% reduction in opioid use for patients in treatment over two years."
As well as receiving medications, clients participate in counseling, though the Hartford Dispensary does not provide details of these services at the time of this writing.
Through its history, Hartford Dispensary has been operated by doctors.
Rehabs.com has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni, affiliated friends or family members, or staff, however, secondary sites yielded mostly positive feedback from alumni: the center had a four-star average rating based on eight reviews on Google at the time of this writing. Though the reviews included six five-star ratings, only two of these happy clients left any accompanying commentary: "Best tasting methadone ever. The juice is always cold and they have a coffee room," E.B. wrote; "Methadone saves lives," added an anonymous alum.
However, two reviewers complained about rude or unhelpful staff. "Horrible experience if you are seeking an understanding, professional staff," D.B. wrote in a typical comment.
Hartford Dispensary staff gave mixed-to-negative feedback on the organization, yielding a 2.8-star average rating based on 16 reviews left on Indeed.com to date. The reviews repeatedly complained of a change in administration at the beginning of 2017 that allegedly made the facility a less pleasant place to work; staff complained of an excessive fixation on money instead of patient care, leading to overburdened staff. "Money valued more than patient care. Used to love working here, but things changed drastically- and negatively- in the last year... New policies also threaten patients with taper and discharge constantly. There are multiple new reports and paperwork that take time away from individual and group counseling sessions. Perhaps most concerning is that valued and skilled long-term staff have been leaving the agency rapidly," one former staff member wrote in a representative review.
There is currently no information provided on the facility's website regarding its costs, though CiteHealth listings of other facilities in the network indicate that Hartford Dispensary locations accept Medicaid, private insurance, and Access to Recovery vouchers, and offer a sliding fee scale.
In September 2017, the Hartford Courant reported that the Hartford Dispensary would pay $627,000 to settle allegations of violating federal and state False Claims Acts. The company is charged with making "repeated false representation and false certification to federal and state authorities” to the effect that it had a medical director. A lawyer for Hartford Dispensary said: “Hartford Dispensary, a non-profit organization, has fully resolved regulatory issues that were raised about its compliance with a regulation requiring that a ‘medical director’ oversee treatment," while also strongly disputing that it was ever in non-compliance with regulations.
