Hawaii Island Recovery Philosophy
Hawaii Island Recovery is the Big Island’s premiere residential drug and alcohol treatment center. The facility offers a comprehensive continuum of care in a comfortable, tranquil, and serene setting. Evidenced-based treatment modalities are combined with holistic and experiential therapies (such as the program’s unique Dolphin-Assisted Psychotherapy) to give clients a well-rounded recovery experience. Individualized treatment plans, a low-client-to-staff-ratio, and compassionate care pave the way for a full and lasting recovery from addiction, co-occurring disorders, and chronic pain.
Areas of Specialization
Facilities that offer “holistic therapy” see and treat patients in the context of their entire lives and health status. They treat the “whole person,” not just the addiction.
Addiction recovery does not end with discharge after completing a rehab program. Facilities that offer aftercare planning and/or support work with patients to ensure sustainable recovery by helping to plan and make arrangements for transitional or sober living, help with housing, vocational counseling, etc.
Addiction is a complex condition which affects all aspects of a person’s life. Left untreated, addiction is a chronic, debilitating and often life threatening disorder that diminishes one’s health, happiness and capacity to live a productive and fulfilling life. Hawaii Island Recovery approaches addiction as an affliction affecting body, mind and spirit. To support a full and enduring recovery, all manifestations of an addiction require attention to ensure a lasting return to wellness. Our experiential and holistic therapies are designed to inspire, stretch, sooth and restore you to a natural state of wellbeing.
As the Big Island’s premiere residential treatment center, Hawaii Island Recovery offers the most effective holistic therapies available to treat addiction. Our holistic therapies used in combination with traditional modalities provide our clients with a synergistic array of healing practices to ensure their full recovery from their addiction in body, mind and spirit. Hawaii Island Recovery offers Reiki, Acupuncture, massage, and yoga to support the healing process. Homeopathic, naturopathic and nutritional support are also available.
Recreational activities include but are not limited to swimming, snorkeling, hiking, golfing, fishing and surfing. Regular outings to areas of cultural significance are scheduled with the input of clients. These include Volcano National Park and the City of Refuge. Recreational activities are planned according to client ability and are designed to have a physical component to improve motor skills and conditioning, a social component and/or an educational component. It is the goal of our recreational activities to provide clients with a supervised setting in which to practice appropriate social interactions, improve their physical condition and foster healthy interests that support long term sobriety.

ABOUT HAWAII ISLAND RECOVERY
Located on the northern tip of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, the residential rehab of Hawaii Island Recovery (HIR) provides treatment for adult men and women struggling with substance abuse and behavioral addictions. The facility treats a wide range of disorders including food, sex, gambling, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and substance abuse. The facility is also certified to treat co-occurring disorders such as anxiety and depression. Detox services are available on-site.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Hawaii Island Recovery uses multiple evidence-based, holistic, and experiential treatments to treat a variety of conditions. The facility is exclusive, limiting its patient capacity to eight clients at a time. Each client participates in an individualized program designed to mix treatment options for optimal results. Because of this, the length of stay varies on a person-to-person basis; however, most programs are based around monthly segments and could run 30, 60, or 90 days depending on the chosen treatment options.
Individual counseling, group therapy, and 12-step meetings form the backbone of treatment plans. Diverse therapeutic techniques, including cognitive behavioral therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EDMR), and hypnosis are used, along with experiential treatments. One of the leading treatments used is dolphin exposure which is reported to have highly successful results in cultivating changes in patients.
Attendance at off-site Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings is required, and residents are encouraged to get sponsors and participate in service work. HIR also makes the most of its natural environment with activities such as animal-inclusive therapies. Holistic therapies such as Reiki, massage, acupuncture, and yoga are also offered.
The staff includes board-certified physicians and psychotherapists, master's level registered addiction specialists, licensed addiction counselors, and licensed naturopathic doctors and acupuncturists, among others.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Residents live together in a large house with an outdoor pool and a porch with ocean views. Meals are prepared by a private chef in the fully-equipped kitchen. Recreational activities such as hikes, snorkeling trips, and excursions to the Volcanoes National Park are organized, and clients are given membership to a gym, along with ongoing personal training sessions.
