ABOUT HAZELDEN BETTY FORD FOUNDATION
In January 2017, a new Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation facility opened in the Carmel Valley area of San Diego, Calif. The outpatient drug and alcohol treatment center provides outpatient treatment and a specialized program for opioid addiction for teens and adults (16+) seeking treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders in the Scripps health system. Hazelden Betty Ford is the largest provider of substance abuse rehab in the U.S., following the merger of two long-standing nonprofit organizations in 2014. Detox is not available on site, but is available through other nearby facilities. Aftercare planning services are incorporated in the treatment programs.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
The admissions process for Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation begins with an assessment which may begin on the phone, in person at the outpatient facility, or during an evaluation period in a Betty Ford residential rehab center. Clients are assessed by trained admissions counselors and physicians. Each client receives an individualized treatment plan.
Three levels of evidence-based outpatient treatment are offered, each founded on 12-step concepts and practices. Dual diagnosis treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders of depression and anxiety is also offered.
Clients also participate in educational groups to learn more about addition and disorders. Clients learn new coping skills and sober living skills. Families are encouraged to participate as well. Aftercare services including alumni groups, recovery retreats, and ongoing monitoring are all provided to clients that complete programs.
The facility also provides medically-assisted treatment via an integrated approach developed within Hazelden Betty Ford. In addition, clients needing treatment for gambling, eating, and other compulsive behavior disorders may seek treatment. Other special topics addressed include family and intimate relationships and vocation-related concerns.
Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation employs board-certified addiction medicine physicians, Master and Doctorate-level psychologists and therapists, and licensed advanced addiction counselors. A licensed chaplain also serves on the treatment team. Areas of specialization listed on the facility’s website include crisis intervention, anger resolution, PTSD, and holistic counseling. Many on staff have more than 15 years of experience in addiction treatment, and half a dozen worked with Scripps before opening the current facility.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation has a clinical environment for outpatient treatments. Website photographs feature images of simply furnished meeting rooms with large windows looking onto surrounding hills and trees. A pharmacy is on site for medically managed treatments.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
Rehabs.com has received feedback from former clients of the Scripps McDonald Center, which closed prior to the opening of the current clinic. The two facilities share a treatment philosophy and staff members.
When alumni of the Scripps McDonald Center were asked to rate the staff's level of training and experience, eight alumni gave an average rating of 4.4 out of five. Alumni gave treatment effectiveness an average rating of 4.5.
The sole critical reviewer cited counseling and no assistance with aftercare as weaknesses. On the other hand, several alumni reported long-term sobriety as a result of the facility’s structured, 12-step focus, which “set [them] up to live sober.”
On Google, this location earned two five-out-of-five star reviews. One anonymous reviewer wrote: “This is a very beautiful facility delivering the best Recovery service in San Diego . The staff I have met are very professional and compassionate.”
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
Reviews by loved ones were more mixed. Four friends and family members polled by Rehabs.com provided split opinions on treatment effectiveness. However, the three asked to rate staff experience all chose four out of five stars or higher. Holistic offerings fared the worst with an average rating of 2.5 out of five stars.
The cost of treatment at Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation is covered in-network for Scripps patients and by most other insurance plans. Payment plans are made available on a case by case basis.
A January 2011 article in the San Diego Tribune reported that the Scripps Mcdonald Center, which provided detox services and residential programs, would shut down due to seismic and land use issues. A Del Mar Times January 2017 story covered the shift in service to Hazelden Betty Ford.
