Meet the Staff
Mark G. Mishek
President and CEO
Mark G. Mishek is a Minnesota native with extensive executive-level experience in health care. Mishek was named President and CEO of Hazelden in August 2008 by the Hazelden Board of Trustees and officially assumed this role in November 2008. With the merger of Hazelden and the Betty Ford Center in February 2014, Mishek became President and CEO of the newly-formed Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. Mishek's career in health care spans 30+ years. He came to the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation from the Allina Hospitals & Clinics system, where he held various senior positions, including President of United Hospital of St. Paul, Executive Vice President for Law & Public Affairs and General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary. "The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation is an outstanding organization with a rich legacy and a bright future," said Mishek. "I am honored and grateful each day to lead such a highly respected, mission-driven company. Our organization truly is an international leader in helping people sustain lifelong recovery to addiction to alcohol and other drugs. Mishek earned a B.A. degree with high honors from the University of Minnesota and a J.D. degree with honors from the University of Minnesota Law School. He is the former chair of the St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce. He is a past board member of Portico Healthnet, Capital City Partnership and ClearWay Minnesota.
He lives with his family in St. Paul and is in long-term recovery from the disease of addiction.
Executive Director of Adult Services at Hazelden's Center City
John Driscoll has worked in the treatment field since 1991 and at Hazelden since 1999. He has been a counselor, manager, and director in Recovery Services and is now the Executive Director of Adult Services at Hazelden's Center City, MN facility. Prior to his employment at Hazelden, Driscoll started and directed a long term treatment program for women and their children in Chicago. Driscoll is a licensed alcohol and drug counselor, has an undergraduate degree in psychology from Northern Michigan University, and attended the clinical psychology graduate program at Marquette University in Milwaukee where he completed all but his thesis for his MA in clinical psychology. In 2009 he earned an MBA from Hamline University.

ABOUT HAZELDEN BETTY FORD FOUNDATION - CENTER CITY
One of 14 treatment facilities operated by the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation — one of the most storied networks of treatment facilities nationwide — the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation facility of Center City, Minn. offers residential treatment and a partial hospitalization program (PHP) with sober housing for adults struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. The facility also offers medical detoxification services on-site.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Upon admission, clients participate in a comprehensive assessment to help clinicians form an individualized treatment plan. Depending on the client’s needs, clinicians may recommend clients enroll into the residential program or the day program (PHP) while resided in nearby sober housing. Hazelden’s programming blends evidence-based treatment methods with 12-step immersions and integrated mental health services
During treatment, clients participate in individual and group counseling, addiction education lectures, various life-skills and relapse prevention workshops. The facility also offers specialized program tracks for healthcare and legal professionals. The facility may also incorporate medication-assisted treatment (Suboxone) into programming for individuals recovering from opioid addiction, while ongoing medication management is provided to dually diagnosed individuals.
In addition, clients are introduced to the principles and practices of the 12-step model of recovery, which is central to Hazelden’s treatment program. Clients attend 12-step meetings, study fellowship literature, and may complete coursework that guides the client through “step-work.” The facility also provides a four-day family program for loved ones, family members are encouraged to attend Al-Anon.
Length of residential treatment is determined by individual needs, though most residential treatment plans last between one and four months. PHP is held on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and clients reside in sober housing units on Hazelden’s campus. PHP typically lasts between eight and 10 weeks. In some cases, clients may be encouraged to utilize PHP as a continuum of care. A 25-session continuing care program is available to graduates, as are structured sober housing opportunities and regular alumni events.
Hazelden’s multidisciplinary staff is comprised of medical doctors, psychiatrists, and psychologists, as well as licensed alcohol and drug counselors, licensed social workers, licensed professional clinical counselors, and marriage and family therapists. The facility also boasts its own publishing division and offers a graduate degree program in addiction studies.
ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES
While information is scarce concerning the facility’s accommodations, images sourced from the facility’s website indicated that the sprawling campus features a pool, fitness center, café, store, lounge areas, hiking trails, a meditation room, and lecture hall. Most of the 138 individuals polled at the time of this writing praised the facility’s amenities and accommodations. A representative segment of the 138 individuals, 54 survey respondents polled on the matter gave the facility’s exercise and leisure activities an average rating of 4.22 out of five stars.
WHAT ALUMNI SAY
A clear majority of alumni polled by Rehabs.com felt that the facility was highly effective, citing the facility’s staff, treatment programming, and discharge planning as facility strengths. A representative segment of the total alumni polled, 27 former clients offered average ratings of 4.04 out of five stars for the level of family participation, 3.7 stars for the facility’s counseling options, and four stars for the ease of communication with loved ones during treatment. Offering five-star ratings for the facility’s ability to resolve conflict and the effectiveness of individual counseling, alum C.A.H. wrote: “Great discharge planning, also extensive follow-up with discharged patients.”
Twenty-six individuals polled on the matter gave an average rating of 4.61 stars for the treatment staff’s level of experience and training. “Hazelden treated me like family, with respect, dignity and made me feel valuable,” alum R.S.W. wrote. Offering a five-star rating for the respect shown to clients during treatment, alum L.D. added: “Hazeldon is an excellent treatment center and has high priority on recovery.”
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
Most loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date echoed alumni praise. Twenty-seven loved ones, a representative segment of the total reviews provided to Rehabs.com by friends and family, gave average ratings of 4.44 stars for the level of family participation, 4.26 stars for the treatment staff’s level of experience and training, and 3.96 stars for the facility’s counseling options. Offering a four-star rating for the facility’s staff support, one anonymous loved one wrote: “Excellent quality and care.”
Agreeing with this positive assessment, another anonymous loved one gave a four-star rating for the facility’s ability to treat co-occurring disorders. “It is a beautiful, comfortable facility. The clients are treated well. The family program is fabulous,” the loved one wrote.
WHAT STAFF SAY
The three staff members polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing also felt the facility was highly effective and reported no concerns regarding the quality of care. All three staff members submitted four and five-star ratings for the experience and training of staff and the facility’s commitment to client privacy. “Our research proves the treatment we provide can work,” employee T.J. wrote.
The facility accepts most major insurance policies, and program costs start at $945 per day. "Scholarships” may be available to individuals who require financial assistance. With some exceptions, a majority of the individuals polled by Rehabs.com felt the facility was overall affordable. Fifty-four individuals, a representative segment of the 138 individuals polled, gave an average rating of 3.48 stars for the facility’s affordability.
