Heartland Behavioral Healthcare (HBH) is a state-operated psychiatric hospital, one of just five in Ohio. Founded in 1898 and operated by Ohio’s Mental Health and Addiction Services department, HBH of Massillon, located eight miles west of Canton, offers inpatient care for acutely mentally ill adults, including those struggling with substance use. Forensic clients are also accepted here.

HBH assesses potential patients during admission before accepting them for treatment. The facility does not accept walk-ins or direct admissions. Once accepted, patients undergo psychiatric and behavioral evaluations to determine a suitable treatment plan. To stabilize patients, HBH may utilize a combination of pharmacological intervention and therapeutic programming.

To treat patients struggling with co-occurring substance use concerns, the facility may facilitate substance use-focused counseling and educational classes. HBH may also introduce patients to self-help groups, such as the 12-step model of recovery.

Psychiatric services include social services, client education, occupational and recreational therapy, and work evaluation, as well as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and peer support services. Loved ones may visit the facility on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends and holidays from 1 to 4 p.m.

HBH’s staff includes M.D.s and nurses, according to the facility’s website. All three individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave perfect five out of five-star ratings for the staff’s level of training and experience.

HBH is a 124-bed, non-smoking hospital. Clients live in separate units, which include shared bedrooms with private bathrooms, nursing stations, a salon, library, art room, computer lab, and kitchens with accompanying cookings lessons. Patients may utilize the hospital's sport courts, gym, and rec room, as well as participate in nightly activities in the unit courtyards and tend gardens as part of their holistic treatment.

The two alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave positive feedback with caveats. Both former clients indicated that they would recommend treatment at HBH and offered perfect five-star ratings for its overall effectiveness and treatment for co-occurring disorders.

However, the alumni only gave one and two stars for holistic offerings, and two and three stars for counseling options. Ratings also indicated that family involvement is not a focus of the program. “The facility may not have the biggest selection of recreational activities but you will definitely get the help you need,” an alum wrote. Both individuals praised the staff.

Secondary review sites yielded mixed coverage. To date, 11 Google reviewers rated Heartland Behavioral Healthcare Hospital an average 2.7 out of five stars.[1]. On Facebook, which the facility can manage, 17 reviewers to date rated the facility an average 2.9 out of five stars, with 10 positive reviews and seven negative.[2]

In writing, alumni were split on the quality of staff. In a negative review, alum Helen wrote: "Just want to push medications without even knowing your story/history. If you were not depressed prior to admission, you will be." On a more positive note, alum Brandy wrote: "I loved it here.the people are so nice and the food is good.;))"

The single loved one polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave positive feedback. They rated HBH's family participation a perfect five stars and its counseling options and holistic treatment offerings four stars. They also praised the staff's "openesss and guidance."

According to the facility’s website, HBH accepts Medicare and Medicaid, as well as other funding options.

In February 2016, CantonRep.com reported two forensic clients escaped from Heartland Behavioral Healthcare and assaulted two staff members. A representative of the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services told reporters it was cooperating fully. “We take very seriously our duty to provide a safe environment for employees, patients, and the community through our Regional Psychiatric Hospital system,” they said.

They had patient but firm staff. They also were good at properly choosing the right medications according to circumstance. The activity list can be kind of dull at times. The facility may not have the biggest selection of recreational activities but you will definitely get the help you need.
