Heartview Foundation Philosophy

Since 1964, the Heartview foundation has treated more than 24,000 clients and families from all over the U.S. and Canada. Based in Bismark, the facility is one of the most trusted drug and alcohol treatment centers in the state of North Dakota. The substance abuse rehab takes a holistic approach to treatment and offers individualized care, as well as a staff trained in a variety of disciplines. Heartview offers a full continuum of care, including detox, residential and outpatient services, as well as community education courses and seminars.

Areas of Specialization

  • Intensive Outpatient (IOP)
Patients who undergo intensive outpatient treatment continue to live at home and sometimes go to school or work while participating in a highly structured treatment protocol that is focused on ending substance abuse. Programs vary in terms of how much treatment patients receive, how often and for how long. Some facilities design individualized intensive outpatient treatment programs.

  • Family Program
Research shows that the odds of successful, sustained recovery from addiction are far higher when family members and loved ones are involved in treatment. Drug and alcohol addiction often have genetic roots, whether related to substance abuse, mental illness or both. Family dynamics also play a role and, often, family members are the first to realize a loved one has developed an addiction. Also, it’s important for family members to understand and embrace the lifestyle changes that are required to sustain recovery.

Review by Rehabs.com Contributors

Founded in 1964, the nonprofit Heartview Foundation has two locations in North Dakota: one in Cando and one in Bismarck. Both facilities provide comprehensive substance abuse evaluation, treatment, and education services for adults and their families. The Bismark location, which is the subject of this review, offers both residential and outpatient care, as well as medication-assisted therapy (MAT) for clients dependent on opiates. Non-medical detox services are available on-site.

According to Heartview Foundation's website, all treatment begins with an initial evaluation conducted by a trained counselor. Clients are expected to complete a questionnaire and submit to a urine test. From there, Heartview’s staff uses evaluation findings to recommend an appropriate course of treatment.

Clients in residential treatment are closely monitored by a 24-hour staff. They participate in a mix of group therapy, ongoing assessment and psychological testing, along with educational sessions, creative arts, and holistic offerings such as yoga and acupuncture. In addition to attending Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings, clients also engage in supervised activities off-site, including movie nights, church services, and trips to the gym.

Outpatient options include a partial hospitalization program (PHP) that meets five days per week and addresses topics such as family education, anger management, anxiety, personal growth, and life skills. There is also an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that includes similar components, but consists of fewer treatment hours. Lastly, low intensity outpatient care is typically reserved for those who have completed treatment in the past, but require ongoing follow up.

A 20-session aftercare program is offered to all graduates and meets for one hour a week. There is also a two-day family program for loved ones.

Heartview Foundation's website notes the multidisciplinary treatment team includes a physician trained in addiction care, registered nurses, addiction counselors, chemical dependency technicians, a chaplain, an art teacher, a chiropractor, and a certified yoga instructor.

The four people polled by Rehabs.com in this metric gave 4.5 out of five stars for the staff's level of training and experience.

The center's website notes the facility is located in the historic district of downtown Bismarck. The 11-bed residential facility provides clients with shared bedrooms that are simple but cozy. Amenities include an outdoor area with shaded seating and a basketball court. Residents are permitted to make phone calls when they are not in therapy or class, and visitors are allowed during designated times.

The six individuals surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave an average of 4.5 out of five stars for accommodations and amenities.

Emily, the sole alum surveyed by Rehabs.com to date, gave the Heartview facility in Bismarck a mostly positive review. She gave the rehab mostly four and five out of five stars across 15 different evaluated metrics, including treatment effectiveness, holistic offerings, cleanliness, 12-step inclusion, and faith-based treatment.

The reviewer gave Heartview lower ratings of three stars for its counseling options, its treatment of co-occurring disorders, and its affordability. “I felt this facility helped me in my recovery,” Emily wrote. “[But] i feelas someone paying out of pocket it was an expense that added to my stress levels.”

The four loved ones surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing had mixed feedback for the Heartview. Three of the family members evaluated the following four metrics and gave the facility four and five out of five stars for its family participation, its connectivity and visitor policies, and its cleanliness.

However, high cost was an issue, and A.S. noted the program could use more individual counseling and mental health treatment.

The one former staffer who was surveyed by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing remarked that one of the program’s strengths was its emphasis on 12-step principles.

While there is currently no information provided on the facility's website or otherwise regarding its costs, the one staffer surveyed by Rehabs.com indicated that insurance is accepted.

I felt way too much time was spent on group, hearing the same stories everyday from your group. Not focusing why you have a problem in the first place, how you got to that point and why you continued to use. The woman that did my evaluation accused me of using meth. I had taken diet pills and had something in it that registered as a source of meth ( I bought it at target) she interrogated me until she convinced herself I was lying! Another counselor embarrassed me by saying in front of everyone that I walk around the halls always looking so sad. Seriously, like any one wants to have to go through addiction! Overall it needs to take a different approach. Crystal (therapist) and father Becker were the best people I found there.

I think more mental health, one on one sessions would be beneficial.

some staff members give above and beyond what is expected of them. too costly, must have good insurance, not accessible to people who really need it. so far the best help my daughter has gotten, she is still doing well.

They have wonderful holistic offerings and family participation; however, treatment was not effective and they do not have good counseling options.

It was faith based and that was a strength of the facility. However, I feel it more about the dollar and less about the people's needs. I felt this facility helped me in my recovery. .. i feelas someone paying out of pocket it was an expense that added to my stress levels. I went to ttreatment on my own... no legal issues.

12 step emphasis was a strength of the facility.
