Review by Rehabs.com Contributors

In operation since 1948, Helen Ross McNabb Center of Knoxville, Tenn. provides a range of behavioral health treatment and psychiatric services for children and adults seeking treatment for chemical dependency, psychiatric disorders, or co-occurring disorders.

A specialized program of the regional treatment provider, Great Starts offers intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment designed for pregnant women and mothers with young children who are recovering from chemical dependency or mental health disorders. It is one of 42 (19.4 percent) of Tennessee facilities that provide services to pregnant women. Typically used as an aftercare service following primary treatment, Great Starts does not provide on-site detoxification services.

Upon admission into the sober living facility, clients may undergo an initial substance abuse and psychiatric assessment to identify specific needs. Great Starts is one of the 138 (63.6 percent) substance abuse treatment facilities that provides comprehensive mental health assessments. It uses evidence-based treatment approaches to treat co-occurring disorders.

The facility has multiple special focus programs. The Diversions program helps clients get treatment while dealing with legal requirements. It also serves as a source of intervention to help clients prevent legal issues and seek treatment early.

The residential program is overseen by a medical director and has space for the children of clients. It is one of the 4 (1.8 percent) facilities that have residential spaces for children.

The facility also has a short-term detox program. The program lasts up to 12 days and is overseen by medical personnel to ensure that clients have all of their medical needs met.

The Helen Ross McNabb Center is one of Tennessee’s 71 (32.7 percent) CARF-accredited facilities.

On Citehealth, three reviewers provided positive feedback about Great Starts, namely the facility’s staff; however, one reviewer expressed concern that qualified staff members were leaving the facility.[1] Offering a five out of five star rating for the facility’s quality of care, one anonymous alum wrote: “The staff is absolutely incredible at the Great Starts Nursery but seem to be disappearing...,” while another alum added: “I'm a former client and graduate. This place saved my life…”

For qualifying clients, there is funding available from the state. The sole alum polled to date by Rehabs.com gave four out of five stars for the facility’s affordability.
