ABOUT HORIZONS FAMILY CENTERED RECOVERY PROGRAM

Horizons Family Centered Recovery Program is a treatment center run by the Catholic nonprofit Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare dedicated to helping those struggling with substance abuse issues. Horizons employs more than twenty thousand people in 18 hospitals, 70 clinics, and three long-term care facilities in Iowa, Colorado, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

The Horizons facility is located in Wheaton Franciscan’s Kimball Ridge Center — a large complex that also houses a hospice and many outpatient services just south of central Waterloo, Iowa. The spectrum of care runs from pre-treatment classes on addiction for those not yet requiring treatment to short-term residential inpatient care, intensive and evening outpatient options, and a specialized program for those with a history of relapse.

The facility is also equipped to handle dually diagnosed clients, and is one of just nine hospital-based substance abuse treatment facilities in Iowa (about six percent) to provide medical detox.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

According to Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare’s website, each client receives a confidential assessment designed to determine the appropriate level of care and create a comprehensive and individualized treatment plan.

The center utilizes Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings and provides an introduction to the 12-Steps, as well as individual counseling and education for both the individuals in treatment and their families.

The center’s website notes that family involvement is a crucial component of treatment, and loved ones are permitted to participate in select segments of the treatment process. Special sessions on addiction education and other recovery issues are also offered to family members.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

According to the center’s website, the treatment team at Horizons Family Centered Recovery Program includes physicians and a 24-hour nursing staff, as well as psychiatrists, counselors, registered nurses, chemical dependency technicians, recreational therapists, and clergy.

One anonymous reviewer, while noting that the facility itself was small, wrote: “They’ve helped me though my rough detox and rehab! Now I’m clean!”

On CiteHealth[2], Horizons received two negative reviews from anonymous former clients. One reviewer criticized the program for its lack of 12-step focus, while the other claimed that clients were able to receive drugs from visitors.

The treatment process when I entered was still somewhat in it's infancy. At the time there was no recognition of cultural distinctions or diffrences which would have led to more personalized treatment programs. One of the issues I did appreciate is that the process kept me inhouse for 28 days. This enabled me to become chemically clean which is necessary so as to induce rational thinking. You cannot form any rational thoughts until the drugs influence is completely removed physically.

dedicated experienced counselors and support staff. well defined and laid out program. However, it is costly. It worked for my brother he is still sober 5 years later. The depenedency on AA and NA are a little obsessive.

There are AA, Al-Anon, & Ala-teen meetings on Sunday nights; many people go to the AA meetings and you really learn a lot. I've been to those meetings at Horizons and they're just wonderful.

I was not an inpatient. I was an outpatient. I cannot really comment about accommodations in the rooms or meals outside of the one meal I was provided each day when I was there which was lunch.

There is a 24 hour round the clock staff. However, there are not a lot of extracurriculars. There needs to be more therapy for outpatient continued care.
