House of Mercy, a Des Moines-based nonprofit organization, proves a variety of services that address issues relating to health, housing, child welfare, and addiction. Adults and adolescents struggling with substance abuse and/or mental health disorders may access both residential and outpatient care through House of Mercy’s programming. Sober housing is also available.

“Project Together,” House of Mercy’s residential program, is designed exclusively for women, including those who are homeless, pregnant, or parenting. The center works to address addiction as well as co-occurring disorders. In addition to attending 12-step meetings, clients engage in a variety of treatment modalities and activities including individual therapy, group therapy, life skills and parenting education, as well as specialized interventions that address trauma, abuse, and gender-specific problems. There is also a “Project Together II” program, which offers similar residential treatment to homeless or non-homeless women, regardless of their parenting status.

In both programs, once residents stabilize and demonstrate progress in recovery and parenting skills, they may participate in the center’s self-sufficiency programming, which includes G.E.D classes, college courses, and activities that provide guidance on job readiness, employment, and money management.

“In Touch With Teens” is House of Mercy’s group living program for female adolescents 18 and under. The young clients work with a counselor to develop an individualized treatment program, which may include individual, group, and family counseling. Special emphasis is placed on continuing education, and job-training assistance is provided if appropriate.

House of Mercy’s outpatient program treats a broader population, offering care to adults and adolescents of both genders. Like the organization’s residential program, treatment also addresses co-occurring mental health and behavioral disorders. All clients receive case management support and participate in a mix of individual counseling, group therapy, 12-step work, and specialized treatment groups.

Continuing care groups are available to all successful graduates. Participants are encouraged to attend for at least a year after they complete their primary treatment program.

The treatment team includes certified alcohol and drug counselors, licensed mental health counselors, licensed master social workers, and master’s-level therapists.
