Located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore in the community of Salisbury, Hudson Health Services provides acute inpatient and partial hospitalization programs (PHP) for adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders. On-site, medically-supervised detoxification services are offered, as well as supportive housing. The nonprofit facility has been in operation for more than 35 years. In Maryland, the center is among the 14 non-hospital facilities to provide inpatient detox.

Treatment at Hudson Health Services, Inc. begins with an initial assessment with medical and psychiatric staff members. The treatment team develops an individualized treatment plan using the Matrix Model for recovery, which prioritizes education, evidence-based individual and group therapy, and 12-step practices.

During residential treatment, clients also receive medication management services along with other supplemental treatments for any co-occurring disorders. Alternative and recreational therapy treatments are available as well, including music therapy (drumming).

After detoxification (as needed) and stabilization through the short-term acute inpatient program, clients may be referred to the partial hospitalization program (PHP), one of only 39 PHP programs in the state. Unlike many comparable day programs, Hudson Health's PHP clients stay overnight in sober living facilities, ensuring a structured, supportive environment in the evening. Clients continue to participate in 12-step fellowship, counseling, and educational sessions that address addictive behaviors and irrational thought patterns.

Peer support, family sessions, and alternative therapy groups are also incorporated. Two of the facility’s special holistic offerings are “Holy Yoga,” with spiritual and physical practices, and “Drumming Off Drugs.” The latter, led by staff members certified in the therapeutic practice, helps clients with anxiety and depression reduction, group cohesion, following instructions, and increasing self-confidence.

To assist clients in transitioning back into the community, supportive housing is available to PHP alumni. Clients are required to gain employment, attend 12-step meetings, and participate in on-site group sessions. Family involvement is encouraged throughout treatment, and family support services are available including counseling.

The treatment staff consists of physicians, psychiatrists, registered and licensed professional nurses, several consulting psychologists, one of whom is certified in hypnotherapy, master's-level social workers, and certified drug and alcohol counselors. To date, the five individuals polled on the matter by praised the aptitude of staff members.

Staff Experience and Training: 4.2/5

All staff members hold advanced degrees, training, and certifications in their fields including counseling, chemical dependency, and human services. The facility is one of 69 facilities in the state certified by the Joint Commission.

Counsellors are experienced, & many have been in the patient's shoes. There is lots of down time with no activities to do. I chose this place because it was local for me. I really enjoyed the staff for the most part, and most of the patients actually wanted to be there. You get to leave campus for 12 step meetings, but I feel most of the treatment was generalized & not specific to each person. I feel this limited its effectiveness.

Outside speakers were good. Class time and group experiences were valuable. This facility needs a better assessment process. Concentrating on 1st step of AA or NA would be better than 4 steps. Would like to see separation of AA and NA. I believe the staff treated clients with the goal of preparing them to to we'll in their lives clean and sober upon discharge. They helped us do just that.

They give you what you need in order to have a foundation for a recovery lifestyle. Introduce to 12 step programs. Excellent counselors and staff. Keep you busy enough to not have much idle time in your head. I didn't like certain things like am walks but it's about learning to live different and healthy. Rehab is a great beginning foundation, doesn't matter which, it's what the patient is willing to receive while there.
