Cumberland River Behavioral Health (CRBH) offers comprehensive substance abuse, mental, behavioral, and developmental health treatment services to individuals at all stages of life. The nonprofit’s Independence House in Corbin, Ky., is one of 18 locations spread across eight counties in southeastern Kentucky. Independence House is a 12-step based halfway house for women struggling with substance use disorders. The facility also offers intensive outpatient services, according to its website. CRBH is one of 21 percent of facilities nationwide to offer recovery services tailored for pregnant or postpartum women.

Treatment is divided into two phases. In Phase One, clients keep to a strict schedule involving chores and meal preparation. Clients also attend groups on mental health and recovery topics including domestic violence, relapse prevention, parenting, STD/AIDS education, and others. The program includes common recovery curricula such as 28 Day Sober Living, Recovery Dynamics, Living in Balance, and Seeking Safety. Clients must also meet with counselors three times per week.

In Phase Two, clients continue addiction education and begin working on issues of community re-integration. In this phase, clients must work if medically possible, maintain a budget, pay rent, and maintain a savings account. Clients also take GED and parenting classes and earn infant necessities through the Earn and Learn program.

During this phase, clients may also receive family visitations every Sunday for two hours and monthly 24-hour visitations. Prior to visiting, loved ones must attend Family Day meetings, designed to educate them about addiction, recovery, and family support among other topics. Clients may also have their children stay overnight, if custody agreements allow for it.

During discharge planning, clients and staff schedule outpatient meetings for recovery from substance use, as well as mental health appointments if necessary. Clients are also encouraged to find a sponsor.

CRBH's website does not list information regarding staff at the Independence House. The two alumni polled by to date rated staff's level of training and experience two stars and five out of five stars.

The two anonymous alumni polled by to date gave split opinions about Independence House. One alum rated the facility's family participation and faith-based treatment four out of five stars, but both rated its holistic treatment offerings only one star. Offering a five-star rating for the staff's level of experience and training, one alum wrote: "The staff is well trained and caring," but added: "There doesn't seem to be any holistic approach whatsoever. It fits the area, however."

The other alum gave one star for the facility's group counseling and the effectiveness of lead counselors. In contrast, four Google reviewers to date all rated the Independence House a perfect five stars, leaving no comments.[1]

As an organization, CRBH received an above-average rating of 3.3 out of five stars based on 12 reviews on Indeed.[2] A former therapist wrote in a representative review: “Great learning experience, poor pay.”

Apart from a $400 admission fee to Independence House, CRBH, as an organization, offers sliding-scale fees. The facility works with private insurances and accepts Medicaid, Medicare, and workman’s compensation.

The staff is well trained and caring. They make sure to train attendees on life skills (cooking, cleaning, etc) and interpersonal skills before introduction back into real life. This facility is in Southern Kentucky and most attendees are from the area. That being said, the program is mostly geared toward a Christian based program. There doesn't seem to be any holistic approach whatsoever. It fits the area, however. I loved the staff at Independence House. They can only house about 20 women at a time, so it's small and you're able to concentrate on your program without too many personalities coming at you. There is a "KP" schedule, so everyone takes a turn cooking for the house throughout the week. I loved this about this rehab. The staff is quick to resolve any disputes between attendees through mediation. We also took frequent "field trips" to Cumberland Falls, which is nearby and also to local AA meetings.
