Located in Philadelphia, Penn., the Interim House is a one of the state’s 284 private, non-profit organizations, providing residential, outpatient, and intensive outpatient (IOP) services to women who are seeking treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The Interim House was established in 1971 and was the first specialized treatment program for women in Pennsylvania. The center does not offer detox services.

Interim House utilizes a holistic and trauma-informed approach to treating addiction and co-occurring disorders. It is one of the 260 facilities in the state that offer programs specifically for women.

Among the facility’s holistic options are art, music, dance, and psychodrama therapy. The facility also provides a range of educational courses on different topics to help clients develop the skills that they need to be successful after treatment. Life skills workshops, spirituality groups, anger management classes, yoga, and fitness and nutrition classes are also available.

Incoming residents are tested at the center and those who test below the 6th grade level are enrolled in Adult Basic Education Classes. Residents who test above the 6th grade level are enrolled in General Equivalency Diploma preparation classes. The center also refers women to community college classes.

The residential program has structured activities 12 hours a day. Residential clients stay in the program for up to six months, making it one of Pennsylvania’s 114 long-term treatment programs. Once a client graduates from the residential program, she has the option to continue her care in the intensive care program.

IOP services are offered four days per week and includes individual and group therapy, life skills training, job training, and housing assistance. Job training is relatively rare in treatment as only 38.6% of facilities across the country provide vocational training options.

The outpatient counseling program is for women in recovery and helps them maintain a sober life. Clients participate in individual and group therapy in this program. Outpatient treatment ranges from four months to a year.

The staff at the Interim House includes therapists, a psychiatrist, and a clinical supervisor. There are also several licensed social workers available to help coordinate services.

Interim House is located in a historic, four-story mansion that holds 25-beds. The facility also has a separate art studio. During their stay, clients have access to counseling staff around-the-clock. Many of the amenities of home are provided including cleaning, cooking, and laundry services.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY has yet to receive alumni feedback to date. Secondary sources revealed glowing reviews. On Google, four alumni gave five out of five-star reviews.[1] Two of the reviews are from clients who attended the program many years ago. Both recent reviews indicated that the program “saved” them and how they were “grateful to the staff.”

On Facebook, where the facility can manage its page, Interim House Inc has a perfect five out of five-star average rating from six people.[2] Alumni indicated that it was an effective program that brought them long term sobriety that “saved” their lives.

The one staff member that was surveyed by at the time of this writing gave a generally positive review about their experience at the Interim House. The staff member gave the center four out of five stars when asked if they would recommend it. They mentioned the mental health therapy was the strength of the center. But, also wrote it was too strict. The staff member gave three out of five stars for its holistic offerings, connectivity, family participation, and facility cleanliness, but four out of five stars for its treatment of co-occurring disorders and the experience of the staff.

The facility accepts private insurance plans. It is also one of the 172 facilities in the state that offers services at no charge for clients that cannot pay.
