ABOUT JACKSON RECOVERY CENTERS - CHILD & ADOLESCENT RECOVERY CENTER

Jackson Recovery Centers runs 12 rehabs around Iowa, which between them provide a range of residential and outpatient programs for men, women, adolescents, and children who are struggling with substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health concerns.

Located in a quiet, residential neighborhood toward the west of Sioux City, the organization’s Child and Adolescent Recovery Center provides residential and outpatient treatment for adolescents ages 12 to 18 who are struggling with chemical dependency and dual diagnoses — one of 72 rehabs in Iowa that offers programming specifically for adolescents. If necessary, psychiatric stabilization and medical detoxification services are available through the facility’s stabilization unit.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Treatment is trauma-informed and based on the 12-step model of recovery, and most adolescents stay in the residential program for 90 to 120 days.

The residential program is divided into four phases, which clients progress through at their own pace, gaining increased privileges and responsibilities as they go. At every stage of treatment, they participate in 12-step meetings as well as individual and group therapy.

Family days are held twice a month, and in order to graduate, clients must have participated in at least one family day. Ongoing medication management is also for dually diagnosed clientele as indicated. The facility also offers an accredited school on-site to help prevent clients from falling behind in school.

Outpatient services include individual, group, and family counseling; regular drug and alcohol testing; and medication management. The center also offers a three-session “Teen Intervene” program designed to help adolescents and parents establish healthy family guidelines, discuss peer pressure, develop coping skills, and learn about alcoholism and drug addiction.

Alumni of both inpatient and outpatient care are invited to attend continuing care services that focus on relapse prevention and maintaining sobriety.

STAFF CREDENTIALS

Child and Adolescent Recovery Center’s treatment team includes a psychiatrist, an MD, medical and psychiatric nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and therapists. The five individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the staff's level of training and experience gave mixed feedback.

Staff Experience and Training: 3.4/5

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

Clients sleep in simple, shared rooms in gender-specific wings, and meals are served in a cafeteria-style dining room. However, the six individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center's cleanliness offered mixed opinions.

Facility Cleanliness and Upkeep: 3.2/5

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

Of the three alumni polled by Rehabs.com to date, two would not recommend the facility and one would. Of the two negative reviewers, one wrote that treatment was a "waste of time," while the other gave the center five stars for its treatment effectiveness, but indicated that the center was not clean. In addition, the center's holistic offerings received low ratings of one and three stars.

The positive reviewer wrote that they had successfully got sober at Jackson, and added: "STAFF WAS VERY NICE, UNDERSTANDING AND ACCOMODATING." In addition, the center's level of family participation received solid four-star ratings from both of the alumni polled on this metric.

Secondary sites also yielded mixed reviews. On Google, the adolescent center has a 3.5 out of five-star average rating, based on four reviews.[1] Only the most negative reviewer, M.S., provided any feedback: a one-star rating in which they complained of poor schooling, bad food, and excessively strict rules.

On Facebook, Jackson Recovery Centers, as a whole, has a four-star average rating based on 103 reviews, though the facility can curate its own reviews on Facebook.[2] The most common complaints cited unhelpful staff and poor discharge practices, such as leaving clients with insufficient support or referrals for continued sobriety.

"Feels like a huge ass hospital, (it was before) and the staff were on f-cking ridiculous power trip," Lorna wrote in a representative comment on the adolescent program. However, positive reviewers repeatedly praised the center's staff, and stressed that help is available at Jackson if you're prepared to work for it.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The three loved ones polled by Rehabs.com to date gave mixed feedback. Together, their reviews reflect a facility that offers the basics of good treatment, while serving a challenging and challengingly varied population whose needs it can't always meet.

Two of the three reviewers stressed that the center can't help unless clients themselves are willing to work, and two parents also mentioned that certain demographics — such as court-ordered clients or older teenagers in treatment for addiction to hard drugs — made treatment difficult. "If your child is younger than the rest it may be a rough ride because some of the staff and kids can be tough and they are far from home. My son did not feel safe," one anonymous reviewer wrote in one such comment. The two reviewers polled on the center's family participation gave it a three-star and a four-star rating, while the holistic offerings received two two-star ratings.

WHAT STAFF SAY

Of the two staff members polled by Rehabs.com to date, one would recommend the facility and the other would not. The negative reviewer cited: "Lack of training for all counselors. Little oversight," and gave the facility two stars for its honesty and the quality of its leadership. However, the other reviewer gave the center five stars in all of the evaluated treatment metrics, including its honesty, its willingness to put clients' interests first, and the overall quality of its staff. "Is very patient oriented, treats employees and patients with respect and dignity," T.K. wrote.

FINANCING

The facility accepts Iowa Medicaid (Title-19) and most private insurance plans. Sliding scale fees are offered, based on income. The five reviewers polled on the center's affordability gave mixed feedback.

Affordability: 2.4/5

The halfway house is not safe for kids. They need structure, meals, sleep and substance abuse treatment. Please, please don\'t let your child go downhill there! I was warned by other moms, They were correct...kids free to call who they want to of course that is their using friends. My child transferred to a new facility, tested positive for drugs when he arrived directly from bed to bed transfer. He had been smoking a pack a day there and weed. I worry about the other boys there. I am so thankful to see what true substance abuse treatment is. I know in my moms heart and gut we would have lost him there. He is physically healthy again, working on using. He looked worse when we took him out of there than he did 7 months earlier when he went there sad.

Strengths: Close to home, different familities in the area for different age groups/needs. Weaknesses: Cost. They were great. You can only do so much if a person doesn't want to actually use the help.

IF YOU ARE WILLING AND WANT TO QUIT ITS A GREAT P;LACE. IF IT IS COURT ORDERED OR FAMILY FORCES THEM NO MATTER HOW WELL FACILITY IS IT WONT WORK. THEY HAVE A GOOD PLAN TO HELPING ADDICTS ITS MUCH DIFFERENT THEN AA BUT WILL ONLY HELP IF PATIENT IS WILLING.

STAFF WAS VERY NICE, UNDERSTANDING AND ACCOMODATING. IT WAS A VERY DIFFICULT TIME IN MY LIFE, AND JACKSON RECOVERY HELPED ME THROUGH IT AND NOW I AM SOBER AND BETTER PERSON. THIS FACILITY WAS THE ONLY FACILITY I EVER ATTENDED SO I CANT REALLY COMPARE IT TO OTHERS. I FEEL ITS NOT MEANT TO BE A VACATION SO WHAT THEY HAD TO OFFER WAS ADEQUATE FOR WHAT I NEEDED AT THAT TIME.

They worked to make sure that each family could afford the treatment. Lack of training for all counselors. Little oversight. I would question if their treatment protocols were best practices. There are better treatments available.

Depending on the age of your child it can be scary. If your child is younger than the rest it may be a rough ride because some of the staff and kids can be tough and they are far from home. My son did not feel safe. He was one of the youngest there and there for more minor drugs in comparison to others and they did not keep him safe. They should have organized their groups more accordingly. He ran away because he feared for his safety .The food was also awful.
