Joseph House provides treatment and housing support for military veterans who are struggling with homelessness and substance abuse. The signature program, Marx Recovery Center, is a residential program for homeless male veterans. Located in Cincinnati, Ohio, the nonprofit center accepts veterans from across the country. Just 13.1 percent of Ohio’s 406 treatment facilities offer programming tailored for vets.


Marx Recovery Center clients participate in a three-month residential program focused on achieving physical and emotional stability. During their stay, residents receive 10 hours of direct services each week, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based individual and group counseling, case management, and addiction education.

The center collaborates with holistic therapy providers in the area to complement traditional counseling and prioritize mindfulness practices. Residents have access to yoga, equine therapy, and art therapy. They are also encouraged to attend 12-step meetings, and treatment staff provide referrals for medical treatment as needed.

This facility’s website emphasizes the value of giving veterans time to progress in recovery, which can include continuing outpatient treatment for another six to eight months following residential rehab.


A majority of Joseph House staff are veterans of the U.S. military, and some are alumni of the Marx Recovery Center. The facility employs master’s-level therapists with chemical dependency counseling licenses.


Marx Recovery Center of Joseph House is located in downtown Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine district and can accommodate up to 36 clients at a time. The organization maintains partnerships with various work and educational organizations in the area as well as with the local VA Medical Center.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY has not yet received any reviews from this facility’s alumni, but reviews submitted to third-party sites at the time of this writing were overwhelmingly favorable. On Google, 11 individuals contributed to an average rating of 4.6 out of five stars for Joseph House Marx Recovery Center. More than one-third cited staff empathy as a strength or characterized the program as life-saving.[1]

Facebook calculated a rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars for the facility based on input from 16 individuals, split between alumni and staff or community volunteers. Reviews and Joseph House’s official page (which its staff may monitor) tended to highlight the personal insight gained through the program.

In a representative reviews, D.H. wrote: “Let me see me as the person I really am and can be without the use of alcohol or drugs.” Alum C.I. added: “Gave me the information that I needed to get my life under some control.”[2] Reviewers on both sites also praised the holistic activities and described their relaxing benefits.


The one staffer polled by to date indicated that they would not recommend the program. They provided one- and two-star ratings in most evaluated categories, including the staff’s level of training and experience, treatment for co-occurring disorders, and the effectiveness of treatment. By contrast, a single volunteer awarded Joseph House five out of five stars on Yelp, characterizing employees as dedicated[3], and about half a dozen volunteers and staff on Facebook praised the program.


Joseph House is a United Way partner and receives other public and private funding to cover costs of its programs, according to the facility’s website.
