Julian F. Keith, a state-operated center, is one of the only 96 (19.6 percent) treatment facilities in North Carolina to provide inpatient treatment, along with medical detox and psychiatric stabilization for individuals struggling with substance abuse and dual diagnosis. One of three such centers in the state, Julian F. Keith is located in a leafy area off I-40, 14 miles east of Asheville.

Referrals to residential care are accepted only from local managed entities (LMEs) and managed care organizations (MCOs) in North Carolina; the detox unit also accepts referrals from the judiciary, emergency departments, and elsewhere. This is one of the only 15 (3.1 percent) inpatient treatment facilities that offers detox services on-site. The center accepts both voluntary and involuntary admissions.

The admission process includes medical and psychiatric evaluations and nurse screenings. Treatment is interdisciplinary, and the facility aims to deliver individualized, holistic, and comprehensive programs.

There are two programs: the acute care unit (ACU), which offers 24/7 medically managed detox and crisis stabilization, and the acute rehabilitation services unit (ARS), which offers residential treatment. Residential treatment typically lasts 14 to 21 days, and is filled with individual and group therapy, psychological services, substance abuse education, recreational therapy, and discharge planning. The center also provides couples and family therapy as desired by the client.

Upon discharge, clients are referred to local providers for continuing care, including mental-health providers and self-help groups.

Medical care is provided by psychiatrists, primary care physicians, and nurses. The center also employs counselors and social workers, and 97.7 percent of treatment facilities in North Carolina have continuing education requirements for staff.

The sole alum polled by Rehabs.com to date awarded five out of five stars to the staff's level of experience and training. However, the single staff member surveyed by Rehabs.com gave this same category just three out of five stars.

The ACU has 30 detox and crisis stabilization beds, and according to an article on Citizen-Times.com, the facility has 68 beds in total. The average number of residential inpatient clients at a given time is 18 individuals.

The two individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date on the center’s accommodations, meals, and cleanliness awarded four or five stars in each category.

The sole alum surveyed by Rehabs.com to date shared a highly positive experience at this facility, commenting, "This is the best inpatient treatment facility in the Western North Carolina area." This former client, D.D., provided four stars for the center's connectivity policy and its counseling options, and five-star ratings were given to holistic offerings, the level of family participation, and the center's ability to treat co-occurring disorders. When polled on the likelihood of recommending this facility to others, D.D. responded in strong agreement, and commented upon the "knowledgeable, understanding staff" as the facility's major strength. The only criticism D.D. provided was, "Can be a difficult place to get a bed in times of crisis. At times there is up to a 2 month wait to be admitted."

Secondary review sites also yielded almost exclusively positive commentary, with a 4.5-star average rating based on 17 reviews on Facebook (where the center can manage its own page),[1] as well as a 4.5-star average rating based on 15 reviews on Google to date.[2] The reviewers regarded the facility in glowing terms, repeatedly describing the center as life-changing or life-saving. “It is one of the wonderful places it's why I started my process of getting clean… they gave me a lot of hope a lot of understanding and encouragement that I could do this thing I would like to thank the team that works there,” K.W. wrote in a representative review on Facebook.

While Rehabs.com has yet to receive feedback from affiliated loved ones, self-reported family members on secondary sites gave high praise to ADATC at the time of this writing. "The staff was very caring and kind," S.T. wrote about her brother's experience on Google.[2] Parent J.L. echoed, "as far as I can tell this facility is tops."

The single staffer polled by Rehabs.com to date gave a mostly positive review. “People were great. A weakness was not talking,” they wrote anonymously, giving the center five stars for its treatment effectiveness, four stars for its holistic offerings, counseling options, admissions & discharge procedures, and treatment for co-occurring disorders, and three stars for its family participation and exercise options.

Clients are accepted regardless of their insurance status and ability to pay, and payment is determined on a sliding scale depending on the individual’s income. Both individuals polled by Rehabs.com to date gave the center four stars for its affordability.

Positive reinforcement and knowledgeable, understanding staff. Can be a difficult place to get a bed in times of crisis. At times there is up to a 2 month wait to be admitted. This is the best inpatient treatment facility in the Western North Carolina area.
