ABOUT KANSAS CITY VA MEDICAL CENTER
Located in Kansas City, Mo., the Kansas City VA Medical Center provides crisis intervention, short-term inpatient treatment, and outpatient services for military veterans struggling with psychiatric disorders and chemical dependency. It is also one of 113 (44 percent) of treatment facilities in the state to treat those with co-occurring disorders.
The hospital also offers outreach and case management for homeless veterans. If required, the VA hospital may provide medically monitored detoxification for patients who are experiencing severe symptoms of withdrawal.
TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT
Before beginning treatment, patients undergo an initial assessment to help clinicians identify treatment goals and determine the most appropriate level of care. Clients who require crisis stabilization or treatment for severe psychiatric conditions, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and self-harming behavior, may begin their treatment in the center’s short-term, inpatient program. This level of care combines substance abuse education, individual therapy, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and therapy groups that cover a variety of topics, including goal setting, spirituality, and current affairs. Most clients remain on-site for eight to 10 days before they are considered stable and ready for discharge.
Once stabilized, clients may be referred to the facility’s outpatient program, which offers a less intense level of care. Outpatient clients continue to receive education, therapy, and support as they transition back into their everyday lives. According to its website, discharged patients may also be eligible for a compensated work therapy program. Clients will receive vocational assistance, which is offered by 54 percent of treatment facilities in the state.
Kansas City VA Medical Center employs a qualified team of physicians, substance abuse and mental health counselors, psychiatrists, social workers, case workers, nurses, and support staff.

However, just as many reviewers found the center’s treatment team to be “helpful” and “over the top nice.” “Appointments are timely, staff is courteous and polite and the cafeteria is not bad either. Perhaps it is a measure of personal attitude and expectations,” Thomas wrote in a five-star Google review.
WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY
The two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing disagreed with the positive feedback submitted by alumni. Neither respondent indicated that they would recommend the facility. The other respondent told Rehabs.com that the facility had provided their family with a “no cost option,” but they would “not send anyone there.” Despite this negative assessment, this loved one submitted three-star ratings in most evaluated categories, including the center’s counseling options, its family participation, and the staff’s level of training and experience.
