ABOUT KANSAS CITY VA MEDICAL CENTER

Located in Kansas City, Mo., the Kansas City VA Medical Center provides crisis intervention, short-term inpatient treatment, and outpatient services for military veterans struggling with psychiatric disorders and chemical dependency. It is also one of 113 (44 percent) of treatment facilities in the state to treat those with co-occurring disorders.

The hospital also offers outreach and case management for homeless veterans. If required, the VA hospital may provide medically monitored detoxification for patients who are experiencing severe symptoms of withdrawal.

TREATMENT & ASSESSMENT

Before beginning treatment, patients undergo an initial assessment to help clinicians identify treatment goals and determine the most appropriate level of care. Clients who require crisis stabilization or treatment for severe psychiatric conditions, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and self-harming behavior, may begin their treatment in the center’s short-term, inpatient program. This level of care combines substance abuse education, individual therapy, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and therapy groups that cover a variety of topics, including goal setting, spirituality, and current affairs. Most clients remain on-site for eight to 10 days before they are considered stable and ready for discharge.

Once stabilized, clients may be referred to the facility’s outpatient program, which offers a less intense level of care. Outpatient clients continue to receive education, therapy, and support as they transition back into their everyday lives. According to its website, discharged patients may also be eligible for a compensated work therapy program. Clients will receive vocational assistance, which is offered by 54 percent of treatment facilities in the state.

ACCOMMODATIONS & AMENITIES

The Kansas City VA Medical Center’s psychiatric unit can house up to 25 individuals at a time. The four individuals polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing gave the facility’s accommodations and amenities 3.75 out of five stars. The respondents gave the facility’s level of cleanliness four stars.

WHAT ALUMNI SAY

The two alumni polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing indicated that they would recommend Kansas City VA Medical Center to others. They each awarded the center’s cleanliness, the staff’s level of training, and the program’s individual counseling ratings of four or five stars. While one anonymous respondent told Rehabs.com that the center saved their life, Steve expressed overall satisfaction and gratitude for the facility’s group meetings. “Being a Veteran, I am glad the VA offers treatment. The program at the time was geared toward finding a home group of meetings related to quality recovery,” Steve wrote in his review.

The Kansas City VA Medical Center – the entire hospital, not just the psychiatric unit – received above average ratings on secondary sites**.

On the facility's Facebook page, which it can edit, 662 users provided an average rating of 3.8 out of five stars,[1] and on Google, the facility received an average rating of 3.9 out of five stars based on 153 reviews. [2]

On both sites, commentary regarding the staff and the facility was mixed. Those who were disappointed with the care they received reported “rude” and “disrespectful" staff, as well as long wait times. “Too crowed, takes too long to get an appointment,” Geri wrote in a representative Facebook review.

However, just as many reviewers found the center’s treatment team to be “helpful” and “over the top nice.” “Appointments are timely, staff is courteous and polite and the cafeteria is not bad either. Perhaps it is a measure of personal attitude and expectations,” Thomas wrote in a five-star Google review.

WHAT FRIENDS & FAMILY SAY

The two loved ones polled by Rehabs.com at the time of this writing disagreed with the positive feedback submitted by alumni. Neither respondent indicated that they would recommend the facility. One loved one submitted below-average ratings in nearly every evaluated category, including the center’s leisure options, its treatment for mental health, and its holistic offerings, and described the center’s staff as “overworked” and the facility as “understaffed and very crowded.”

The other respondent told Rehabs.com that the facility had provided their family with a “no cost option,” but they would “not send anyone there.” Despite this negative assessment, this loved one submitted three-star ratings in most evaluated categories, including the center’s counseling options, its family participation, and the staff’s level of training and experience.

FINANCING

Kansas City VA Medical Center accepts private insurance, and Military Health System plans. It is one of 85 (33.1 percent) of treatment facilities to accept Medicare. In most cases, veterans do not incur any out-of-pocket costs, though a small co-pay may be required.
